In Loving Memory of Mike "Poppie" Ross
It is with tender hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mike Edward Ross "Poppie" of Queensbury, N.Y. who passed peacefully on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 surrounded by loved ones after a brief illness.
Mike was born on January 19, 1949, in Glens Falls, N.Y., he was the son of the late Leo and Mary (Vespiano) Ross. Mike graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1967 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Education and Physical Education from Saint Bernard College in Cullman, Ala. in May of 1971. After graduating from Saint Bernard College, Mike came back to Glens Falls and taught Special Education at Argyle Elementary School as well as coached football for Argyle High School for a few years. After teaching and coaching Mike worked for the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 plus years of service. After retirement, Mike never stopped working. He spent his time as the go to family painter and handy man. There was not one house that his children lived in where Mike did not spend time painting a room or repairing something inside or out. One of his favorite jobs in retirement was working alongside his sister-law, Kathleen Toomey, at her home on Lake George. There was no project that was ever too small or big for Mike to grab his tools and paint brushes to lend his talents and patience to help his family. It is hard to count the number of bedrooms that he painted over the years, especially his youngest granddaughter's room. Not to mention the number of toys that Mike masterfully put together for Santa Claus.
Mike was also an avid golfer and loved nothing more than playing golf with his three high school friends, Leo, Mark and Pat at the Top of the World. These four shared lots of laughs, hole in ones and some of the best views of Lake George, especially during the fall.
Mike also loved spending time with his family watching and supporting his grandchildren playing hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball and wrestling. In addition to spending countless hours in the pool in his backyard teaching and playing games with his eight grandchildren. Sometimes it was unclear who was having more fun in the pool, Poppie or his grandchildren.
Mike survived by his wife, Maureen Broderick-Ross who was together for over 40 years and married for 30 years. Mike and Maureen who dated while attending St. Mary's Academy, later reunited, spent their time together enjoying their many high school friends, new friends they met along the way and their family. They also both enjoyed their time in Florida over the years, especially on Anna Maria Island soaking in the sun, taking long walks with friends and family.
Mike is also survived by his family, Carrie (Stannard) Casciani and her husband, Chris and two daughters, Samantha and Ashley of West Hartford, Conn.; Jennifer (Stannard) and her husband, Glen Vidnansky and two sons, Connor and Carter of Lake George, N.Y.; Edward Stannard and his wife, Stacy (Greene) and their son, Nolan and daughter, Julia of Lake George, N.Y.; and George Michael Stannard and his wife, Theresa (Beadnell) and their two sons, Colton and Tristan of North Creek, N.Y.; his sister-in-law, Kathleen Toomey of Naples, Fla. and Lake George, N.Y.; and brother-in-law, Edward Broderick and his wife, Paula of Queensbury, N.Y.; and his cousin, Pete Mead and his wife, Jackie of Glens Falls, N.Y. As well a daughter, son, and granddaughter.
Maureen would like to thank the support of all their good friends, you know who you are, the texts of support, the phone calls, the visits that brought many laughs as well as much needed hugs, the heartfelt cards and notes, the food, the supportive neighbor – your acts of kindness are truly a blessing during this time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at St. Mary's Church, 62 Warren Street, Glens Falls, NY.
As per Mike's request, no calling hours are scheduled.
Burial will be held privately for the family at St. Mary's Cemetery.
As a family we would like to offer a sincere thank you to all of the medical professionals at Glens Falls Hospital, Tower Three – it is hard to express the grace that was shown to Mike and all of those who sat with Mike – you were all angels and we will forever be grateful for the care you provided.
