Nelson Greene Obituary

Nelson I. Greene

March 18, 1939 - August 27, 2025

Hebron, Nelson I. Greene, 86, of Hebron, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Born on March 18, 1939, in Hebron, he was the son of the late Herbert and Nettie (Jackson) Greene. A lifelong resident of the community he dearly loved, Nelson was a graduate of Salem Washington Academy and dedicated his life to working the land on the family farm in Hebron.

Nelson was deeply committed to public service throughout his life. He was a founding member of the East Hebron Fire Department and a long-standing member of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, where he served honorably as Chief. He also served as a First Responder and, at one time, on the Hebron Town Board. His contributions to the safety and governance of his community were deeply valued and will be long remembered.

In addition to farming and public service, Nelson was a maple syrup producer and distributor for many years, carrying on the traditions of local agriculture with pride. He enjoyed playing cards, socializing at Stewart's and Price Chopper, and in his younger years, participated in square dancing.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Gladys Jones Greene, who passed in 2009. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Dorothy Brophy, Paul Greene, Leona McWayne, and Hazel McHale.

Nelson is survived by his children, Darlene (Ted) Granger of Salem and Vincent "Vince" (Nancy) Greene of Hebron; his brother, Ralph Greene of Newcomb, NY; grandchildren, Donald (Rebekah) McMorris, Jr., Ashley McMorris, Koby (Danica) Greene, and Kyle Greene; and great-grandchildren, Dylan McMorris Hotaling, Brayden Lorette, Lina Greene, and Gemma Greene. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY. A funeral service will take place on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 1 P.M. at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Debbie Earthrowl. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem.

Memorial contributions may be made in Nelson's memory to the Salem Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 360, Salem, NY 12865, or the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, 3165 County Route 30, Salem, NY 12865.
