Robert Lee Smith

GANSEVOORT/MATTAPONI, VIRGINIA – Robert Lee Smith, 72, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at his home in Mattaponi Virginia.
Born May 19, 1953, in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Victor and Ethel (McGowan) Smith. In his early years, Bob attended elementary school in Gansevoort and graduated from South Glens Falls High School. Following high school he graduated from the University of Houston.
Bob was a man of diverse abilities; his first job was delivering newspapers. Other jobs included working at the Saratoga Racetrack where he was responsible for exercising the horses; working with his father and brother on construction sites; welding for Richmond Tank Car Railroad in Houston Texas, and bartending in Herlong California, he was well traveled and adapted to what was needed. For the last 30 years, Bob lived in Virginia and was employed by the City of Hampton in Virginia. When he retired, he was the Supervisor of Public Works, Street, and Bridges Division.
He was a very good baseball player; an excellent shot on the pool table; loved to go fishing; and played golf. At one time he caddied at McGregor Links Country Club.
Bob enjoyed puttering in his workshop making interesting items such as back scratchers that had included a brush, and an ashtray with a BB gun for the stand. In his later years, he was a comedian and performed stand-up comedy. He enjoyed entertaining customers while bartending. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Timothy Farley; brothers, Victor Smith Jr., Harold Smith (infant); his sisters, Carol Smith (infant) and Judy Smith; and his brothers in law, Craig Winchell and Blaine Voels.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Angela Cutter of Douglas Wyoming and her mother, Connie Rogers; his son, Dale Harris of Newport News Virginia; his grandchildren, Daniel MacDuff of Glens Falls, Joshua Cutter of Argyle, Jeffrey and Weston Farley of Hudson Falls, Toni Cutter of Douglas Wyoming, Chole, Tessa, and Farrah Harris all of Newport News Virginia; and numerous great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters, Rose Winchell of Fort Edward, Lyn Voels of Anniston Alabama, and Betty Gavin (Wayne) of Gansevoort; his sister-in-law, Susan Smith of Gansevoort; his nieces, Ann Winchell of Fort Edward, Paula Winchell (Wayne) of Fort Edward, Connie Lucas of Hampton Virginia, Cherida Williams of Anniston Alabama, Tiffany Bushey (Dennis) of Anniston Alabama; his nephews Michael Smith (Jessica) of Gansevoort, Craig Winchell (Angie) of Gansevoort, Patrick Gavin of Wilton, his name's sake, Robert "Bob" Gavin of Gansevoort; and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Carleton Funeral Home in Hudson Falls.
