Born in Glens Falls on Dec. 22, 1918, he was the son of the late John and Casimeria (Sollohub) Dowmont.

Sanford served in the United States Army during World War II for four years, until he was injured in the line of duty. He served in the 4th Armored Division, 24th Engineering Battalion and was honorably discharged at the rank of Technician 4th Grade. Awards received during his service included the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, and the EAME Theater Ribbon with one star.

He was a master diesel mechanic and welder for the majority of his working career, retiring at the age of 84 from Shoreline Cruise in Lake George.

Sanford was a communicant of St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls, where he volunteered his time for 15 years.

He was a fixed wing pilot and his love of flying led him to build and fly one of the first Ultra Lights in the area. In his later years, he developed a love of nature and flowers, enjoying bird watching and gardening.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers and sisters; Loretta, William, Viola, Anna, and Robert.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Stella Dowmont of Hudson Falls; his children: Elizabeth and her husband, Dr. Lawrence Garbo, Lieutenant Colonel Mary Dowmont, USAF Ret., Sanford Joseph Dowmont, and Catherine Marteney and her husband, Terry; five grandchildren: Gregory, Patrick, Corinne, Stephanie and Rachel; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 8:30 a.m. at St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church, on the park, in Hudson Falls.

The Rite of Committal will follow at Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery on Duell Road in the town of Stillwater.

There are no words that can ease your sorrow but know that Uncle San will be remembered and will be in our hearts always. We think of you often and remember the only too few times we were able to get together. I have started the letter I spoke of and will be adding more as the days go by. I think Uncle San is looking down on us and smiling. And I am smiling back and glad to have known him. Renee

My sincerest condolences. I came to know Sanford while working as a Captain for Shoreline Cruises and worked with him on numerous projects through my 12 years there. Sanford was an amazing welder and fabricator and was truly an artist in all respects whether it be working with metal or painting flowers and birds. He taught me a lot while I worked with him as he was always happy to show me how to do something. And as a man who could have been home enjoying retirement, he showed me what true work ethic is as he still came into work even when he was in pain and hurting up until he finally retired a few years ago. If there was ever a true Rennaisance Man, Sanford was it!! Sanford was a genuine man with the kindest heart who was too modest to see how great he really was to the rest of us. He will be greatly missed. Again, to the family of Sanford Dowmont, my deepest and sincerest condolences.
