Edith Boyer Obituary

Mrs. Edith M. (Yocom) Boyer passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 6th, at Chestnut Knoll, in Boyertown, with family at her side. Born in Douglassville on April 27th, 1930, to Bertha May (Davidheiser) and Isaac Newton Yocom, she was a loving wife, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and a treasured teacher and friend to many. Mrs. Boyer grew up on her family’s farm on Yocom Road in Douglassville. She was a faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Pottstown. She graduated from Pottstown High School in 1948. She continued her education at West Chester State Teachers College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1952 and a Master's degree in 1969. She devoted her entire teaching career of 34 years to Pottstown’s students. For several years, she taught at Jefferson Elementary School, but she taught at Barth Elementary (formerly West End Elementary) for most of her career, retiring in June 1986. Former students, student teachers, and colleagues praise her innovative teaching methods, her forthrightness, her blend of rigor and humor, and her loving attention to all. Dedicated to community all her life, she was a leader in the Camp Fire Girls organization. For her Bear Creek Lake Civic Association in Jim Thorpe, PA, she served as head of recreation, initiating countless programs for all. She kept everyone in touch with the BCL Newsletter she founded, and she gathered people together over many luncheons and dinners at her and her husband’s home. She brought the same enthusiasm to her winter community of Tala Lake in Port Charlotte, Florida. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, game board player, and a noted photographer, especially of birds and wildlife. Mrs. Boyer is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Randall R. Boyer. She was predeceased by her brothers, David I. Yocom and Norman D. Yocom, her sisters-in-law Grace (Murray) Yocom and Marie (Fisher) Yocom, an additional sister in law Velva (Boyer) Hunsberger, two brothers in law Stanley Boyer, Merrill Boyer, and her nephew Robert E. Yocom. She is survived by her sister Gladys Y. Metka and husband, William; her sister-in-law Betty Keck Yocom; a brother in law Richard Boyer, her nieces and nephews Susan Y. Bernard and husband George, Kathryn M. Yocom, Robin F. Dech, Carol Fisher, and Scott Fisher and wife Cheryl; Margaret R. Yocom and husband John Slack, Douglas N. Yocom and wife Nancy (Mortensen), Janet Y. Byerly and husband Timothy, and Diane Y. Supplee and husband David; Bill Metka and wife Ruth (Wedde), and Ruth M. McVey and husband David; Becky (Boyer) Poremba and husband Thomas; Brian Boyer and wife Debby, Annette B. Hine and husband Carroll, Lamar Boyer and partner Betsy Bourdeau; and her 20 great-nieces and nephews; and her 24 great-great nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. on Saturday April 14, 2018 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hanover & Walnut Streets, Pottstown. Officiating will be Reverend Burlington Latshaw, III. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. There will be a viewing Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mrs. Edith (Yocom) Boyer’s name to Make-A-Wish (5 Valley Sq, #210, Blue Bell, PA; 215-654-9355), Fox Chase Cancer Center (333 Cottman Ave, Phila, PA 19111; 888-369-2427), Emmanuel Lutheran Church (150 N. Hanover St., Pottstown, PA 19464 610-323-4312). Arrangements are by the Schumacher & Benner Funeral Home & Crematory, at 359 King St. in Pottstown, PA. We first met Edie in Bear Creek Lakes many years ago. She was a great friend and a christian lady without compare. She and Randy used to take older friends to Florida and then pick them up in the spring and bring them back to the lade. A great friend has gone over for a great reward.
