Joshua David O’Connor, 17, of New Hanover, passed away on December 29, 2020 at his residence. Born in Pottstown, he was the son of David Joseph and Laura Christine (Marks) O’Connor. Joshua was an accomplished Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 36. He was a junior at the Boyertown Area Senior High School, where he sang in the choir and was Sergeant-at-Arms for the school’s Technology Student Association. Joshua was also an avid space flight enthusiast who aspired to work for NASA. As a member of St. Columbkill Church in Boyertown, Josh was an altar server and a volunteer for Vacation Bible School. Surviving along with his parents is his sister Katelyn M. O’Connor; paternal grandfather Thomas E. O’Connor; maternal grandfather Thomas A. Marks; maternal grandmother Paula J. Marks; step-grandmother Deborah Marks; uncle Thomas A. O’Connor fiancée of Sheila Bohn; and aunts Rosemarie O’Connor and Kathleen O’Connor. Joshua was predeceased by his paternal grandmother Jean M. O’Connor. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday January 5, 2021 at 12:00 PM at St. Columbkill Church, 200 Indian Spring Rd., Boyertown, PA 19512, with Fr. Martin Kern officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00-11:45 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joshua’s memory to Boy Scouts of America Valley Forge Council, 1485 Valley Forge Rd., Wayne, PA 19087 or to the Boyertown Area Multi-Service, 200 Spring St., Boyertown, PA 19512. I didn't know Josh personally, but I did have some classes with him. He always participated and was one of the brightest people I knew; he always got top marks in whatever he did. It still hurts to think about his death. My thoughts go to his family, even almost a year later. I'm sorry he never got to pursue his love for space into adulthood.

I had the pleasure of working with Josh both in the classroom and as one of his Math Counts advisors. Josh was always smiling, always willing to help out, and was one of our greatest assets on the Math Counts team. I will always remember him as such an upstanding and kind young man. I am so sad to hear that Josh has passed away. I had the pleasure of teaching Josh Spanish at BASH last year. Josh had so many talents and I loved hearing about his interest in NASA. Our son, Josh, knew Josh from numerous classes and in TSA. He always spoke very fondly of him and he had a great deal of respect for him. Our family is so saddened by this devastating loss. He will be greatly missed. We are keeping his loved ones in our prayers.

Josh was a fine young man and an excellent student. He really kept me on my toes during our study of Astronomy in 8th grade. He came in last minute to help our schools science olympiad team and with very little lead time won his event at Kutztown University. He will be missed and I am sorry for our loss.

Although, we may have spoken face to face, we belong to the same church and I sang along with your mother at our choir. That said, we are no strangers to each other, we are your neighbor and we feel the pain of your loss too. This spring I will plant a tree to remember you just as I planted one when I lost a daughter not too long ago .
