I would like to express my condolences to Vince's family. I first met him in the summer of 1966 as a 34-year-old beginning graduate student, full of trepidation at returning to school after many years. His class was the first class I took as a graduate student. He recognized my age and experience, treated me as an equal rather than as a student, and was always kind. Although he did not direct my dissertation I enjoyed my classes with him and after graduation, saw him several times at historical conventions and events. After receiving my Ph.D, work took me across the country and I was never able to be at Notre Dame when he was in residence. I value my conversations with him and the friendship. Notre Dame will miss him and his generation of scholars.

My name is Monica Smith and first of all I would like to convey my condolences on your recent loss. As I was reading Dr. DeSantis' obituary in my local newspaper, I noticed that his father was originally from Palmoli, Italy. My grandmother, Guiseppina's, maiden name was also DeSantis and she was also from Palmoli. After arriving in America she settled in West Chester, Pa, then moved to Pottstown, Pa. She was married to Michele Saraceni and had 7 children. It was just such a coincidence to read about your deceased family member with the very familiar last name.
