Alphonso Alexander Obituary
Poughkeepsie - Alphonso "Sam" Alexander, 56, a resident of City of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away suddenly on July 25, 2012 at Putnam Hospital Center.
Alphonso was born on May 27, 1956 to Gloria Alexander and the late Leanda Alexander on the beautiful island of Jamaica, West Indies. He grew up with a loving and devoted family in the Down-Lodge District, Parish of Saint Ann. Alphonso attended the Saint Boniface Catholic Church and attended school at the Saint Boniface Catholic School.
Alphonso moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in the 1990's and worked at several places, such Dutchess County B.O.C.E.S and Victory Lake Nursing home, as a custodial worker. Later Alphonso acquired a laborer manufacturing position at Pawling Corporation and then at Pawling Engineering Production, Inc. He was a devoted and dependable employee for the two companies combined for over 12 years.
Alphonso married Yvonne Flowers on March 16, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada and has always been a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather "Papa Sam".
Alphonso was an active member of the Exempt Firemen's Association and was always willing to volunteer for many community events, especially with his father-in-law, John Flowers. He loved to travel, cook, and play dominos with his friends and dance with his lovely wife, Yvonne. Alphonso enjoyed life to the fullest and always took pictures to capture those specials moments. He was loved by many for his sincere compassion for others, his big smile and contiguous laughter.
Alphonso was the 6th of 14 children and was the youngest of the 3 boys. He leaves to cherish fond memories: his sisters, Pearl, Ethel, Myrna, Dorrell, Sonia, Constance, Janet, Claudette, Sharon, Joy and Michelle; his brothers Rupert and Lebert (Monica); his daughter, Nicole Alexander and his stepchildren, Lavonne Taylor, Kenneth Taylor Jr. and Nykisha Taylor; three grandchildren, Noel Watkins, Tasiah Taylor and Damietre Taylor; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 6pm - 8pm on Tuesday, July 31st and 12pm - 1pm on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 at Bethel Church of God in Christ, 91 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY. Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 at Bethel Church of God in Christ with Pastor Dwight Hunt officiating. Yvonne will be bringing her beloved husband back to his hometown in St. Ann, Jamaica to be laid to rest. Arrangements are under the direction of Joseph J. Yvonne - we just received the notice from Robin at Hudson River Housing. While we didn't know Sam we forward heartfelt condolences to you and your family. He sounded like an extraordinary person and the loss you feel must also be extraordinary. Dear Yvonne,
Dwayne and I were so shocked and saddened to hear of Uncle Sam's passing. It was a great joy and pleasure to have known and love such a good human being. I recall his deep love, compassion and appreciation for life, for you, and for all of his children, grandchildren and other family members. He was so engaging, encouraging, and humorous and he also had no time for grudges. Uncle Sam's pure love and commitment for the truth and family was truly impressive. Rest in peace, Sam - you will be missed by so many. You leave behind one of the strongest women I have ever had the pleasure to call a friend, Yvonne, and of course your loving family and friends. My husband and I played the music CD from your wedding over the weekend and laughed as we remembered toasting to Sam and Yvonne from a restaurant in the Newark airport where we were snowed in and missed your wedding!
