Poughkeepsie - Barbara Edna Thomas 67 , loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and life-long Poughkeepsie resident, passed away Thursday July 28, 2011.

Daughter of Helen Cain and the late George Liefer, Barbara was born on November 14, 1943 . A Former employee of IBM and Shop Rite, Barbara was most recently employed at Moriarity's Physical Therapy where she enjoyed her time as an aide until her retirement in 2005. A devout member of St. Peters Parish, over the years she gave her time volunteering and every Easter and Christmas delivered homemade cakes to the priests and the nuns at the church. For the past several years you could see her in the Cystic Fibrosis Walk at Bowdoin Park and lending her time and donations to many charities around the area. It would remiss in not mentioning her longtime love of Elvis Presley, which she enjoyed with her friend of 52 years Dottie Schmidt.

On September 4, 1966 she married Richard D. Thomas, who predeceased her in March of 2000, at St. Peter's Church officiated by the Reverend Peter Cody. She is also predeceased by her step fathers Raymond Palen and Harold Cain, grandparents Joseph and Elizabeth Liefer and grandparents Walter and Helen Crum.

Barbara is survived by her mother Helen Cain, her son Richard Thomas with his wife Sandy and their son, the love of her life Kiernan of New Paltz, her son Todd Thomas of Poughkeepsie; her sister and brother in-law Helen and Hank Lines of Clinton Corners; her brother and sister in law Raymond and Terri Palen of Apache Junction , Arizona; her sister and brother in law Barbara and John O'Brien of Hyde Park, Sister in Law Janet Thomas of Poughkeepsie, Brother in law William Thomas of Hyde Park, Brother in Law and wife James and Helen Thomas of Jacksonville, Florida; and brother in law and wife Donald and Joanne Thomas of Hyde Park. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father James A. Garisto at 10 am, Thursday August 4, 2011 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish. Interment to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Barbara's family would like to thank Doctor Danielle Bajakian, her team, and the staff at NY Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for their hard work and loving care.
