Bill Davis Obituary

Bill C. Davis

Bill C. Davis passed away on February 26, 2021 after a brief illness. Bill was a playwright, author, actor, director and political activist, and was best known for his play Mass Appeal, which premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club and subsequently moved to Broadway in 1981; many productions in every corner of the country followed in later years, and a 1984 film version starred Jack Lemmon and Željko Ivanek. Bill's other works include Dancing in the End Zone, Wrestlers, Spine, Avow, Coming2Terms, All Hallowed, Jeremiah Rules, Expatriate, Austin's Bridge, Concierge, Household Accounts, The Human Cocktail, Open For Me, The Sex King, SIP, Spine, Village Rites, and Visiting Day.

Bill was born in Ellenville, New York and grew up in the Hudson Valley. He attended Catholic schools and graduated from Marist College cum laude. Upon graduation, he worked at Rhinebeck Country Village, a residential community for developmentally disabled and emotionally disturbed adults, which informed his later work. Davis wrote Mass Appeal during his time working and living at Rhinebeck.

Bill loved to write about his family and his own life experiences. He infused his work with humor, societal critique, love of all flavors, faith, forgiveness, and every emotion a human can have. Bill was an accomplished and successful writer and artist, that lived his truth daily and inspired so many others to do so. A trailblazer and innovator through his creativity but even more so through his caring and compassion on both large and small scales. Bill will forever be remembered and loved by his family, his friends, his students, his fans, and his communities.

After the success of Mass Appeal on Broadway, Bill continued to have several of his works performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional, national, and international theatres, as well as at colleges and universities.

Bill was the recipient of several awards including the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Moliere Award, Critic's Choice LA Times, a National Board of Review citation, and the Dramalogue Award. He was Playwright in residence at the Manhattan Theater Club, Playwright-in-residence at Brooklyn College, and Playwright Mentor at Carnegie Mellon.

Bill is survived by his brother, Warren Davis, his sister, Patricia Marks, nephews Bryan Marks and Jeremy Marks, Warren Patrick Davis and their children, and many wonderful friends. Bill was predeceased by his sister, Lois.

Bill was an exuberant, bursting with talent, theatrical genius. Being in his early plays in Poughkeepsie when we were all in college together, was sheer joy. God rest his dear soul!

I had the pleasure of attending Marist with Bill, and the further pleasure of being in all his early plays at the Vassar Institute; even one at the Old Coat. Bill was a dear friend and, of course, a genius. Rest in peace dearest Bill!

I took a playwrighting course from Bill in Poughkeepsie at the time Mass Appeal was first being produced and the writing finalized. It was a small group of us students who met weekly in his apartment for the lessons.
He was a wonderful teacher and under his guidance I wrote my first and only one act play.
My girlfriend and I rode the train back upstate with Bill from one of the first showings of Mass Appeal in Greenwich Village. He was so open about his writing and with discussions about the play with us both for that ride back.

Bill C. Davis
Bill lived across the hall from my 1st Boyfriend in the early gentrification of historic apartments in Poughkeepsie, NY that were renovated to encourage a more gentrified demographic living on Union Street in the early 1980’s. My BF’s apartment had an unobstructed view of the newly decorated light show installed on the Mid-Hudson Bridge, which I use to run across and back as part of my maintenance routine. Bill was introduced to me by my BF, found him to be an agreeable member of our entourage, having dinner parties and going out to the club of choice, ‘Déjà vu’ across the river in Ulster County. Bill was gregarious and had no problem bringing a date to make us a four-some. Bill kept me abreast of his good fortune being acknowledged and sponsored by the theatrical legend Geraldine Fitzgerald at the Manhattan Theater Club, where I got to see and understand how playwright educated screenplays could get his message across with dialogue. The play covered a subject matter and the clout of Ms.Fitzgerald to be financed and presented ON Broadway, where I got tickets to take my theater happy mother. Bill confided to me the feeding frenzy he experienced (celebrities that courted him for a chance to play the protagonist (Bill). Those celebrities shall remain anonymous. but he truly had hit the limelight. Bill kept in touch with me, we visited in NYC and his Connecticut home as he seemed to be financially secure from ‘Mass Appeal’. I was shocked and saddened by my mother sharing the news of his early demise. There is SO much I would want to share with him as a published author writing autobiographical stories, but unable to master the skill of being a play-write. I will miss the narcisstic images of himself on my phone, as he seemed to be living the ‘light fantastic’. RIP Bill C. Davis www.ChristopherDuquette.com

It's Easter Sunday and I just happened to look up Bill C. Davis, author of Mass Appeal. I played the role of Mark Dolson in a community theatre production of the play 30 years ago and was just thinking it would be fun to play the other role now. I was saddened to see that he died, so I just thought I'd leave a thankyou for the memories and prayers for Heavenly peace.
