Charles Frederick Ott

New Paltz - Charles Frederick Ott, 78, of New Paltz, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016, at Health Alliance-Broadway, Kingston, NY.

Born on July 30, 1937 in Cooperstown, NY, he was the son of Charles Frank and Esther Waterman Ott. He married Ann M. Baldwin on July 26, 1975 in Phelps, NY. (Ann died on April 14, 2014.)

A cerebral athlete, Fred played varsity baseball and basketball for New Paltz High School, where he graduated from in 1955. Before graduating from Union College in 1960, he played freshman basketball, varsity volleyball, and even won the college's 1959 intramural badminton singles title. During his free time, he was an avid and exceptional bridge player.

Fred was an asset to many throughout his life. He served 5 years as a navigator in the USAF, worked 1 year as the Assistant Dean of Students at SUNY New Paltz, and taught physics for 8 years at Poughkeepsie High School spaced around an additional 1.5 years recall to the USAF during Vietnam. He then worked 35 years as a Labor Relations Specialist with NYSUT.

Never one to complain, he gave us far more than he took. He served his country; he excelled at his profession; and, to the very end, in countless ways, he supported his family.

Surviving are one daughter, Katherine, & her husband Donald Zehnder II of Westerville, OH; two sons, David F. & his wife Melissa Ott of Mansfield, OH, and Stephen Ott of Westerville, OH; a brother, William Ott of New Paltz, NY; granddaughter, Ashley Marie Zehnder of Westerville, OH; grandson, John David Ott of Mansfield, OH; and fiancée, Barbara DeStefano of Port Ewen, NY.

As president of my union, I worked closely with Fred for many years. He was always a wise advisor and negotiator. I learned from him with every interaction between us - he was always there for me, both professionally and personally. Though not in touch since his retirement and mine, I will always remember him for his professionalism and his wry sense of humor. You, his family members, have my sincere condolences. He will always be in our hearts.

Michael and I first met Fred through our friend Barbara. We liked him immediately. Then we got to know him and we REALLY liked him. He was a great asset to our Port Ewen friend's community. We needed more time with him
