Poughkeepsie - Diane D. Mitchell, 78, a longtime Poughkeepsie resident, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.

Born July 4, 1942 in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of Alexander and Susan Morano Detmer. She was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School.

Diane worked as a bookkeeper for the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie for several years until her retirement. She was also part-owner of the former Park Leigh Interiors, also in Poughkeepsie.

Mrs. Mitchell was an avid reader of Danielle Steele and James Patterson novels, and fan of General Hospital. She also loved spending time at the Jersey Shore.

Described as a sassy, sharp, modern, independent woman, she was way ahead of her time.

Renowned for her interior decorating and skills in the kitchen, her family will definitely miss her chicken marsala and goulash, beautiful Christmas trees and perfectly staged home.

Diane lived in Hamilton, NY for a time with her first husband, Brian Palmiter. After they divorced, she met the love of her life and second husband, Michael Mitchell, and they married on December 29, 1972 in Poughkeepsie. He predeceased her on December 24, 2009.

Survivors include her three children, Bradley Palmiter and wife, Colleen, of Staatsburg, Kimberlee Berdis and husband, Christopher, of Erie, PA, and Stephen Palmiter and wife, Victoria, of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren, Aaron Palmiter, Jordan (Breana) Palmiter, Breanne O'Sullivan, and Michael and Christopher Berdis; and great grandson, Levi Palmiter.

She is also survived by her sister, Sandra Mitchell, and husband, James, of Hyde Park; two brothers, James Detmer of Poughkeepsie, and Alexander Detmer and wife, Maureen, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

A celebration of her life and inurnment of her ashes in Our Lady of the Holy Souls Mausoleum at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie will take place at a later date.
