James E. Harrell, III

WASSAIC, NY - James E. Harrell, III, 80, a longtime resident of Wassaic,NY, died on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at his home. Mr. Harrell was employed at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY for over 35 years where he worked as a supervisor. During his service at Wassaic Developmental Center, he received an Employee of the Year Award and retired in 1988.

Born September 9, 1931 in Hertford, NC, he was the son of the late James E. Harrell, Jr. and Alice White Harrell. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Harrell was an avid bowler who also enjoyed deep sea fishing, hunting, working on his lawn and being with family and friends. He was a longtime member of the Dover Second Baptist Church in Dover Plains, NY where he served as a church trustee, assistant treasurer and bell ringer for Sunday services.

He is survived by two brothers, Aaron Harrell, Sr. of Little Falls, NY and Maurice Harrell of Houston, TX; a niece, Sarah Friot of Little Falls, NY and three nephews, Aaron Harrell, Jr. of Albany, NY, Daryl Harrell of New Hartford, NY and Corey Harrell of Albany, NY. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Thurstine, Myron and Allan Harrell.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Dover Second Baptist Church, Mill St., Dover Plains, NY with Rev. Jon Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2678 South Rd., Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. I used to live next to Jim and Alice. They were the kindest people you would ever want to meet. I fondly remember having hot chocolate and cookies with them and my three little daughters.
He had the best manicured lawn in the neighborhood.
May he have eternal rest with his Mom and brothers.

I was sad to see that Jim had passed. He was the best building supervisor a person could have. When meeting anyone that had worked at Wassaic, I always asked if they knew how he was.
