Jean MacAvery

New Paltz - Jean MacAvery, age 86, of New Paltz, NY, died Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Woodland Pond at New Paltz. Born on September 15, 1930, in Beacon, NY, Jean was the daughter of the late Stephen and the late Sarah (Moore) Schmitzer. She married Joseph F. MacAvery on November 27, 1952, at St John the Evangelist Church, Beacon NY. Joseph (Bud) predeceased her on July 11, 1986. Jean graduated from St John's Riverside Hospital's Cochran School of Nursing as a registered nurse, and after a career in nursing she retired from Castle Point VA Medical Center in Castle Point NY as an operating room supervisor. Post-retirement Jean continued to contribute in volunteer roles at St Lawrence Seminary in Beacon, the Woodland Pond Council and "Kneedlers" group in New Paltz. A lifetime learner, Jean was an avid bridge player and reader. Surviving Jean are her four daughters and a son and their spouses, Ellen McHenry and husband Rick McHenry, Kim MacAvery Fuchs and husband Marc Fuchs, Patricia MacAvery, Eileen MacAvery Kane and husband Rob Kane, and Stephen MacAvery and wife Susan MacAvery. Jean was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Katherine McHenry, David McHenry, Adam Fuchs, Sarah Sinusas, Andrew Berger, MacAvery Berger, Joseph Silvestro, Jean MacAvery, Jacqueline MacAvery, Jessica Cosman, Harrison Kane; 7 great grandchildren, Troy Laurence; Liam Astor McHenry; Jack Fuchs; Eli Sinusas; Malcom Kane; Jake and Ella Cosman and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Jean was preceded by two brothers, Jack Schmitzer and Gerry Moore and a sister, Florence Galbraith Lynch. She will be lovingly remembered by her many friends and the staff at Woodland Pond at New Paltz where she lived in her final years. Friends and relatives may call on Sunday, July 16, 2017, from 1pm to 4pm at Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz NY. A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday July 17, 2017 at St. Joseph's Church, 34 South Chestnut Street, New Paltz, NY 12561. Burial will be made in the family plot at St. Joachim's Cemetery, Beacon, NY at a later date. Donations may be made to the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation at www.rls.org. Arrangements by Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY 12561. Condolences may be made to the family at www.copelandfhnp.com.
