Matthew Sherlach Obituary
Salt Point - His brothers next to him on this side, Mom and Dad waiting for him on the other, Matthew Sherlach said one last good-bye to all of us Thursday morning, November 16, 2017.
The "Big Guy" touched too many lives to count and we were blessed and thank God for trusting us with him as long as he did. Matthew was "special" from day one, born on October 30, 1963 in New Rochelle, NY. The family moved to Pawling, NY the next summer where Matthew began his own "special" relationship with a village, town and community that would continue to grow for his 54 years on earth.
In 1999 he moved to Salt Point to live with 4 of his best friends for the better part of 17 years.
Matthew knew only unconditional love. His smile, laugh and hugs along with the ever present "good news" he could not wait to share with you were his trademarks in life. Always the dapper dresser, he considered himself quite the ladies man choosing not to settle down but to play the field.
Matthew led an active, fulfilling life, from Special Olympics, Camp Smith, house parties and dances with his friends from Abilities First and New Horizons to his most favorite role of all as ball boy for Pawling Tigers football. A role that would culminate in his being inducted into the Pawling High School Athletic Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class.
Matthew is predeceased by parents Pat and Jay Sherlach who lovingly dedicated their lives to Matt as well as hundreds of other special needs kids.
He is survived by his brothers Bill and Bob and nieces Maura, Kylie, Katy and Sylvie who will miss him dearly.
He leaves behind countless lives changed by everything he was a part of.
Anyone who met Matthew would never forget him. As soon as you met Matthew you were his friend.
Friends are welcome to call Sunday, November 26th at Horn & Thomes Funeral Home in Pawling, NY from 3-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, November 27th at 11:00 AM at St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Pawling.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Matthew may be made to the Jay and Pat Sherlach Scholarship Fund, c/o the Pawling High School.

While I had my dental practice in Pawling, there were certain patients that would always make my day when they came in for their appointments, Jay, Pat, and Matt being some of my absolute favorites. What a happy family they were, always smiling and joking around. Back together again, may you all rest in peace...you all are missed, but will never be forgotten.

What memories were brought forth upon reading of my favorite person's passing. I know Debbie and her dad will also be waiting to embrace him as he always held a very special place in all of our hearts. We all go back a long way with only happy memories.

Bill, Bob, I feel very furtunate to have known the beautiful person and soul that Matt was. His sweet smile and his amazing personality made him very special to me and to all he met. I loved having conversations with him and will miss him very much. I know he loved you, his family and that you all meant the world to him. My prayers are with you during this difficult time. Bill and Bob, It was a pleasure to know and work with Matt. The both of you along with your parents were great advocates for your brother. you are a great example of how with support from family, individuals with disabilities can live such a full and rewarding life. Matt was truly "one of a kind" his love for everyone he met was unconditional. I truly feel that my life has been enriched from knowing and working with him. Please accept my condolences and know that I will always have such fond memories of your brother.
