Samuel Im Obituary

Samuel S. Im

Poughkeepsie- Samuel Sung Soon Im, 77, died at home on June 27, 2011. He was born in Jin Chun, South Korea, a son of the late Maria Bong Soon Choi and The Very Reverend Joseph In Jai Im.

A graduate of Kyung Gi High School in Seoul, South Korea, he obtained his bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA. He did post graduate work in solid state physics at Illinois Institute of Technology and Syracuse University.

He worked for Zenith Radio in Chicago, doing research and development in solid state physics; he continued this work at IBM. While at IBM, he shifted gears creating computer programs to help streamline the manufacturing process. He continued to use these skills at Morgan Stanley and Checkfree, following his retirement from IBM.

A lifelong Anglican/Episcopalian, he was active at Christ Church, Poughkeepsie, where he sang in the choir, served as warden and on the Vestry. At the National Church level, he was on the board of the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief (now known as Episcopal Relief and Development), and worked on the development of Korean language congregations in the United States.

His passion for music led to singing in a number of church choirs and community choral groups, including the Oratorio Society of New York, where he sang for several years prior to his retirement. During his retirement he worked on Habitat for Humanity projects, both locally and abroad.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Louise Hand. He is also survived by a daughter, Kui-Bin, of Davison, MI, and three sons: David, of Ruskin, FL, Mark, of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Thomas, of Charlotte, NC. He leaves three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters: Sarah Kim, of Flushing, NY, Helen Ma and Hilda Kim, of Havertown, PA, and Veronica Bae, of Bishkek, Kyrgistan, a brother, Paul, of Anaheim Hills, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, John and Joel.

Dear Louise and Family, I am deeply saddened for the loss of Sam. I only heard of his death today (Friday). I so well recall our early Christ Church days together...memories that will always be cherished. Know that this comes with many prayers and much love to a family that remains dear to me.

It did not take long for me to realize what a special, intelligent, and gifted person Sam was based on the stories Louise and Tom relayed to me. I wish I got to know him myself. Wishing Louise and family peace in this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Singing the Alfred Burt carols for a post-concert reception in a quartet with Sam in Cappella Festiva is one of my best collaborative musical memories. Farewell, Sam. Knowing you was a great pleasure.

I remember Sam and Louise with such fondness when I sang in the church choir at Christ Church. Sam is now in heaven with my mom and dad, Kanky and John Johnsen, singing songs of great joy. Blessings to all of Sam's family. Cindy Johnsen Booth (North Kingstown, RI)

I send my love to Louise and all the Im children, and I offer prayers of thanksgiving for Sam's full and loving life. I have so many memories of Sam, but especially remember his love of music and his quiet, yet deep, God-centered life.
