Frances James Obituary

Frances James, 83 Frances N. (Hinkhouse) James, 83, formerly of West Liberty, died August 10, 2006, in the Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City, Iowa, following an extended illness. Frances married Ward W. James, from Clayton, Georgia, on March 19, 1983 and they made their home in Coralville, Iowa. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday August 14, 2006 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held from 10:00-10:30 a.m., before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Frances N. (Hinkhouse) James was born December 12, 1922, in the Melick home, 517 North Clay Street, West Liberty, the daughter of George V. and Carrie M. Melick Hinkhouse. She graduated from West Liberty High School and Coe College. Frances taught for some years and then retired to stay home and care for her parents. Frances and her brother, Forest Melick Hinkhouse traveled extensively throughout Europe during the 1950's. They also established the Hinkhouse Art Collection at Coe College in 1967. The F.M. and Frances Hinkhouse Lectureship at Coe College was established in 1969. Frances and her brother, Dr. Hinkhouse, were generous benefactors of the University of Iowa's Museum of Art, Luther College in Decorah and Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. Frances was a past member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, the St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City, and the AH, PEO Chapter in West Liberty. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers: Forest M. Hinkhouse and Roger Wesley Hinkhouse who died at birth.
