George Murphy Obituary

George R. Murphy, 40, of South Carolina, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2006, while visiting family in Las Vegas.
George is survived by his daughter, Audrey (mother Jennifer) of Las Vegas; his father Joseph Murphy, Ph.D., of Deland, Florida, his mother Sally Murphy of Hilton Head Island, SC; a brother Joseph Murphy, III (wife Julie) of Las Vegas, NV; a sister Nancy Murphy of James Island, SC; and his nephews Joseph IV, Christopher, Nicholas and Jacob Murphy.
George was an avid outdoorsman, soccer, and football player during his youth. He was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Iowa (alum 1989) where he went to the Rose Bowl and three other Bowls as field goal kicker. George was recognized as the Most Valuable Special Teams Player his senior year and was a four-year letterman.
George was also a successful business owner-operator in the nightclub industry in Hilton Head Island and Savannah, GA. George's clubs were consistently ranked as the top dance clubs. The Zoo in Savannah, Georgia received national recognition as the "Place to go when in Savannah". George will always be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted, loyal and genuine man. His charisma was infectious to all he met and touched.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Rock Bridge Presbyterian Church, Highway 72, in Clinton, SC. An additional memorial celebration honoring George will take place at 4:00 pm on Sunday, May 14, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Highway in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, with a reception to immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the "Audrey Murphy Scholarship Fund" c/o Elizabeth D. McKinney, 1063 Old Milton Road, Clinton, South Carolina 29325.
