Daniel L. Arnold
of Montrose, Pa.
Staff Sergeant Daniel L. Arnold, 27, of Montrose, Pa., was killed in action September 28, 2005, near Ramadi, Iraq, when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Born December 2, 1977 in Montrose, he was the son of Kendall J. and Janet Carpenter Arnold, who survive, in Montrose. He was married to Kimberly M. (Hellmuth) Arnold, Montrose. He was a 1996 graduate of Montrose High School, where he played varsity football, and a 2000 graduate of the Johnson Technical Institute where he earned a degree in Diesel Mechanics. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve on December 11, 1994, as a heavy wheeled vehicle mechanic and served with distinction through 2002. Staff Sergeant Arnold transferred to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard on April 30, 2002, and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as a Recovery Vehicle Operator. He continued his service in the 1st Battalion 109th Infantry from 2002 through 2004 in both Headquarters Company and Charlie Company in New Milford with assignments as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Turret Mechanic and Rifle Team Leader. He completed Infantry MOS conversion training in 2004 at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. When the battalion mobilized for deployment to Iraq in January 2005, he was reassigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant on July 27, 2004. Staff Sergeant Arnold is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge. He was employed by Sherwood Freightliner in Tunkhannock as a Diesel Mechanic. He was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church and Lodge F & A.M. in Tunkhannock, Pa. In addition to his wife and parents survivors include his sons, Devin and Kody, at home; sisters and brother-in-law, Sheryl and Jim Russell, Westminister, Md., and Sandra Howell, Montrose, Pa.; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Shelley Arnold, Montrose, Pa; parents-in-law, Gregory and Karen Hellmuth, Montrose, Pa; maternal grandmother, Mildred Carpenter, Hallstead, Pa; brother-in-law and spouse, Eric and Holly Hellmuth, Montrose, Pa.; nephews and nieces, Nathan, Zachary, Aidan, Sarah, Suzannah and Megan; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Laverne Carpenter, Gerald Arnold and Elizabeth Arnold.
Services will be Thursday, October 13, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Montrose United Methodist Church, 90 Church Street, Montrose, Pa. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at the Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, 74 Church Street, Montrose, Pa. The family suggests that, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Daniel L. Arnold Memorial Fund, c/o Community Foundation of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties, 36 Lake Ave., Montrose, Pa. 18801.
