David Schermerhorn Obituary

David William Schermerhorn
formerly of Endicott
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the death of David William Schermerhorn, 48 of Clearwater FL. He died while enjoying one of his favorite pastimes - scuba diving in the Florida Keys. David spent his early years in Endicott and was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Leona and William Schermerhorn and maternal grandparents Doris Hungerford and George Edmunds and aunt Mary Edmunds. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, daughter and son-in-law Jasmine and Jeremy Leuschke of Tampa, FL, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cassie and John Kappler and their family of Rochester, Minnesota, father-in-law and mother-in-law Ron and Linda Miller of Clearwater. He is also survived by his parents Eugene and Evelyn (Bunny) Schermerhorn and brother Bruce Schermerhorn and Jackie Swan of Endicott, aunts, uncles and many cousins. David loved being on the water and was an accomplished water skier, snow skier, avid boater, fisherman, diver and, as far as playing poker - he was a work in progress. In 1998 David founded the Southern Estuary Association - a non-profit group working to maintain small Florida offshore islands in their natural habitat and pristine condition. He felt very strongly about caring for and protecting our environment. David will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was kind, giving and always willing to lend a hand whether you were a friend or a stranger. We will miss his wonderful sense of humor, infectious smile and great curiosity about everything.
A celebration of David's life will be held on April 17 at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 249 Windward Passage at 6:00 P.M. Those wishing kindly consider memorial contributions in David's name to the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, 100 8th Avenue SE, St. Petersburg, FL, 33701. He was a volunteer and member of the Community Advisory committee there. As per David's wishes he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered at sea.

The first day I met (Estuary) Dave, he talked me into cleaning up an island with a group of total strangers. Afterwards, I thanked him because I had so much fun. I will remember his passion for the outdoors and especially the water for the rest of my life.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family for peace during this difficult time.

Captain Dave is one of my best friends and the best fisherman I have ever known. I miss talking with him and laughing, we laughed a lot and we shared a bunch of good times and some tough times too. I think of Dave almost every day, something funny he did, one of his sayings, or something only Dave could have done, and I smile and laugh.
Thanks for being Dave and making this world a better place for the time that we were lucky enough to have with you.
You lived more in one lifetime than most could live in five.
I miss you buddy.
Your pal,
Stinky Cutbait
