While I have not seen Gary or known of him since the mid to late 1970s when we attended Wake Forest University and were fraternity brothers, I am greatly saddened to hear of his death. However, I feel heartened to now have become aware of his numerous personal and professional accomplishments noted in his obituary. I am proud to have known, studied, and partied with Gary in our youth. He was certainly a very smart, kind and wonderful person, yet very irreverent to our great joy, even then. It is my regret that we never crossed paths after our experiences at Wake.

I'm so terribly sorry about Gary's passing. He was always a cheerful presence at work, and the students loved him. He could always be counted on to lend a hand, especially when it came to projects with complex (or simple) statistics! I will miss him.

Gary was such a good man. He was there for his students - helpful, informative. Seeing him at conferences after I graduated was always one of the highlights. He will be missed.
