Gary Klenovic Obituary

Klenovic, Gary J.

Gary J Klenovic, 65 died Friday May 13, 2016. He was predeceased by his mother Mary A Klenovic, his father John I Klenovic, sister Dorothy M Conroe, brother in law Morris Conroe. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jo Anne Willis Klenovic, his son Jonathan G Klenovic and daughter in law Meaghan Klenovic, daughter Carrie A Shafer and son in law Daniel Shafer, of Chenango Bridge. Gary is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and Donna Willis, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jim Lisi, niece. Adrianna Lisi, many aunts, uncles and cousins from both the Klenovic and Blabac families. Born in Johnson City, Gary's parents moved the family to Chenango Bridge in 1957 to open the Chenango Bridge Red & White Grocery on River Road. He graduated from Valley Forge Military & Prep Academy in 1968. He then went on to Paul Smith's College graduating with a culinary degree in 1971. He returned to Chenango Bridge to work side by side with his parents and eventually taking the reins to become a second generation family owned business in 1978. In 1979 with high school friends, he founded Guiseppe's Pizza. Gary and Jo Anne were married in 1981 and became his last and only business partner. They have managed the Red & White Grocery together, founded Red & White Catering while raising their son and daughter in the "Bridge". Gary had a passion for cooking and grilling and shared his techniques for the perfect steak with customers in the store. He loved all New York sports teams and followed CV hockey, football and baseball. He never missed a dance recital and more than once was rained soaked on the sidelines watching his daughter cheer. He was extremely proud of his children and the adults they had become. Gary loved his children very much as well as their spouses whom he loved like his own. His granddaughter Emerson brought a smile to his face through the pain of his final days.

JoAnne, I was so saddened to learn of Gary's passing. He was a great friend to many and a special friend to his fellow CCHS classmates. My hope is that he has found our other dear family and friends in the afterlife and is laughing and enjoying their company on a pain-free environment from here on.

JoAnn and Family...

I remember seeing Gary in the Red & White for the first time when I was just a little tot. For as long as I can remember, Gary was the staple at the store, everyone knew Gary and JoAnn , the most present business owners one would ever meet. They made the " little corner store" a place of catching up for bridge residents, the mainstay of our community and Gary was a huge part of that. There wasn't one store goer that Gary didn't know, a man of pride and love for his customers and his store.

When I volunteered with Habitat For Humanity, Gary donated food for our weekend workers.
His face and that unique smile that made his eyes twinkle will be missed. A wonder person who made an astronomical impact on Chenango Bridge resident and will be missed more than words could describe.

JoAnn my deepest condolences to you, to the entire family. If there was a word that would ease your pain, I'd say. All of you are in my prayers.

God Bless

We are very sorry to hear of Gary's passing. The Red and White is the anchor of Chenango Bridge. I am always amazed at how much is available in that little plaza. Gary and his family have continued to keep it fresh, a tribute to his ability in business, design, community needs, and culinary ability. He was always a smiling face in the store, ready to help. The fact that it remains that way even with his withdrawal from it is a testament to his business practice and spirit. We will miss him.
