Genevieve L. Cerwonka
Cerwonka, Genevieve L.

Binghamton: Genevieve L. Cerwonka of Binghamton, NY, died on 28 July, 2011, at 67 years of age after a three-year battle with cancer. Genevieve (Genne) was born in Sayre, PA, to Llewellyn and A. Genevieve (Fairchild) Parsons of Binghamton, NY. Genne is survived by her husband Joseph Cerwonka; her mother A. Genevieve Parsons of Binghamton NY; son, John (Cathleen) Callaway of Herndon, VA; son, Aaron (Tricia) Callaway of Wayne, PA; daughter, Ellen Callaway of Cambridge, MA; stepdaughter, Kimberly (Gary) Heavlin of Gilbert, AZ; stepson, Paul (Beth) Tribles of Baltimore, MD; stepsons: Michael (Patrice) Cerwonka of Laurel, MD; Christopher (Wendy) Cerwonka of Kailua, HI; and David (Callie) Cerwonka of Los Angeles, CA; stepdaughters: Carolyn (Tom Burton) Cerwonka of Big Bear Lake, CA; Julie Brust of Hanover, PA; and Susan (Tony) Bertucci, of Pinellas Park, FL. Genne (Gram) was the grandmother of Anne, Ryan and Kristen Callaway of Herndon, VA; Lucas, Sasha and Davis Callaway of Wayne, PA; Charlotte Tribles of Baltimore, MD; and Chad Williamson and Hayley Heavlin of Gilbert, AZ. She was also Grandma Genne to Kevin, Jaclyn, Karen, Andrew, Elizabeth, Emily, Claire, Matthew, Helen, Phillip, Kristina, Mark, Nicholas, Daniel, Savannah, Shelby, Gavin, Logan. Genne was also foster mother to Pansey. Genne is predeceased by her second husband Paul J. Tribles and her father Llewellyn (Lew) Parsons. Genne was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School where her father had previously taught math and her mother had worked as a secretary. She received her bachelor's degree from Penn State and a master's degree in art education from Syracuse. She founded the Yamaha School of Music in Endicott, NY. For 27 years, she was a beloved art teacher in the public schools of Texas, New Jersey, New York, and Maine spanning kindergarten to college education. During that time, she brought photography courses to new heights and established the first competitive computer graphics program in the Binghamton area. She promoted the importance of art history in the classroom and uniquely intertwined the excitement of her travels and experiences into her courses. Genne pioneered cross lesson plans with the music and technology curriculums. Because Genne was constantly experimenting with new ways to "do art" she inspired her students to push themselves, to take risks, and to think more creatively. Genne sought beauty in all that surrounded her: family, friends and the wonders of nature, enabling her the rare gift of incorporating it into magnificent works of art. Her passions, which often overlapped, included multi-media art, photography, teaching/discussing art, computer graphics, pastel painting, cooking, sewing and architecture. She found comfort near water and at the age of 60 found peace in painting it with pastels. Her waterscapes exude a quality that is best described as spiritual and filled with prayer and hope. Her body of work captured the natural beauty and power of the sea, depicting the Atlantic shoreline along the state of Maine Coast. Her artwork earned her the high honor of membership in the Pastel Society of America, and she was awarded numerous art recognitions on national and international levels. Genne's grace, beauty, elegance and impeccable sense of style were unmistakable. She truly resonated the word artistic. Genne's parents owned and operated Parsons Post House Inn located in Ogunquit, Maine for 30 years. Genne and her husband, Joe ran the inn for an additional sixteen before selling it in June 2011. Ogunquit was her favorite place to be and she loved her many friends and visitors. Genne embraced the many challenges in her life with class and grace and she considered herself blessed with a family that expanded with each chapter of her life and were truly blessed by her love. She used her art interest to influence her children and grandchildren's visual outlook on life and how to explore it. Genne painted the way she lived her life - with quiet elegance. For forty-six years the waters of Maine played a role in her life and when she arrived at her "painting life" full time, all the nuances of the sea were in her fingertips. Her background as teacher brought technique and discipline; her eye as artist brought her unique perspective. Her work won awards and critical acclaim as well as the admiration of all who saw it. Her love of art matched her love of family and friends and they are blessed to have her paintings as tangible reminders of a life lovingly lived. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Catholic Church, Johnson City, NY on Monday August 1, 2011 at 10 am. with Rev. Clarence Cerwonka and Rev. Corey Van Kuren officiating. The family will receive friends at J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc. 150 Main Street, Johnson City, NY Sunday from 4-7 pm . Burial will be in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, Alexandria, VA on Tuesday at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lourdes Hospice, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850 in Genevieve L. Cerwonka's memory.

Dear Joe & family,
It is with great sadness that I learned of Genne's passing, when I went to Ogunquit (at the Parson's Post House) just a few weeks back.
I wanted to offer my heartfelt condolences to you and yours.
I still have a very vivid image in mind when I think of Genne welcoming me back each time to Ogunquit.
I loved chatting with her about teaching. Genne wasn't there to greet me this year, but I was a bit comforted by the fact that her beautiful paintings were still up on the walls of the Parson's Post House.
May she rest in peace.
God bless you all.

To the family of Genne Lou. My name is Alice Hardman Vincent. We always called her "Genne Lou" in school at Saint Ambrose Catholic School and Seton Catholic High. I can remember taking sewing lessons at the Enjoy Club House together, where we both learned to start making our own clothes at an early age (9 or 10 yrs). We would sometimes end up at the fabric store on Washington Avenue in Endicott, NY where we would be shopping for fabrics & patterns, usually with our moms in tow. A life well lived, Genne Lou, as is certainly depicted in your obituary. Go in peace to be with God! Love, Alice Hardman Vincent of Boca Raton, FL.

To the Family of Genne, I am so saddened to hear of Genne's passing. I knew her throught the Pastel Painters of Maine and we once exhibited together at a gallery in Portsmouth, NH. She was such a lovely person and a gifted artist. I also thought she was so thoughtful and sincere. I knew that she was really listening to me when whenever we had a conversation. She once brought me a jar of honey made by bees from her home in Oguquit because she knew I had allergies and that consuming local honey could help. We will miss her in the Art community here in Maine. I send my sincere sympathy to you all. Anne Allaire

Genne Lou was one of the kindest, sweetest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I was in several art classes with her during our senior year and I don't believe she had any idea how beautiful and talented she really was. I never heard her speak an unkind word to anyone. I will always remember her beautiful smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

Mrs Parson...please accept my heartfelt sympathy at Genne Lou's passing. As a classmate of hers at UEHS...I remember what a elegant lady she always was. If I remember correctly, she lived across the street from my grandparents at that time. The class of '62 has lost a dear member all too soon.

She was an amazing teacher. I was among the students she first brought Graphic Design to at UE. I do as many art projects as possible to feed my artistic soul. Genne, nurtured that spirit. She was a great inspiration and wonderful person. Thank you for sharing light and color Genne.

I never knew a more multi-talented person.

The times I spent with Genne, the Callaways and the Parsons as a young child will always be precious to me. She was best friend to my mom and like a second mother to me. I was lucky enough to have her as a teacher in high school and also receive the benefits of the amazing art department she had a major hand in creating at UE. Though we have been out of touch, I just want the family to know that I love them and am sending my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Genne will be sorely missed and I am so blessed to have the opportunity to have known her.

I had the pleasure of meeting Genne this past year, so sweet and always a smile on her face. Genne came into my Antique Shop in Endicott and we got talking and it came out about the Inn and her parents and I told her I remember her parents well from many years ago. May she rest in peace now. I am so sorry for your great loss.

God bless Genne and her entire family now and always. Maine will never again be Maine without her. As stated, she did and does resonate the word 'artistic'. Then again, Genne was and is God's finest work of art. It was an honor being guest of her and Joe and the family in Ogunquit since 1991. My daughter Mary was given the middle name of Parson directly because of Genne's kindness. As proud owner of "Seagull Lookout", I will always view it in the wonder of her grace and talent that has no equal (very much like her gingerbread muffins!). May God bless you all in these days and weeks ahead, and God bless Genne Cerwonka the way she blessed us all.
