Jane Benson Obituary

Benson, Dr. Jane W.

Bainbridge: Dr. Jane W. Benson, 87, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at her home in Bainbridge. She was born March 25, 1926, in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late William and Florence Whallon. She married Kenneth W. Benson on February 7, 1948. He predeceased her on January 2, 2011. She is survived by her eight children, Karen & Gary Nearpass of Clyde, NY, Carmel (Kim) & Robert Normand of Gloucester, MA, Tracey & Gary Smith of Bainbridge, Allison & Daryl Smith of Walton, Lesley & Ronald Brown of Greene, Kirk & Carolyn Benson of Gloucester, MA, Scott & Cheryl Benson of Walton, and Kristyn & Robert DeGroat of Bainbridge; 30 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Whallon of Sidney; a sister, Ruth DeWitt of Cleveland, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Jane was a pioneer for woman veterinarians. She graduated for Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1947, one of four women in her class. In 1949, Ken & Jane settled in Bainbridge and began a 60 year career as veterinarians, serving many tri town residents from their local office. In her long career, Jane worked on all types of animals: wrestling with large dairy cows as a young, busy veterinarian to a myriad of small animals later in her years in Bainbridge, at the same time raising eight children. She was a member of the Bainbridge Guilford Board of Education for 15 years. She was on the Board of directors of the United Methodist Home for the aging for 12 years. Her love of singing led her to share her talents with the church choir, Tri Town Theatre and the Binghamton Downtown Singers. Jane was a member of the Bainbridge United Methodist Church, volunteering as the Treasurer, choir director, and for the soup kitchen and food pantry. She also volunteered as Girl Scout leader, delivered Meals on Wheels, and for hospice. She, along with Ken, was very involved with the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, having been a part of it from its inception. Popcorn, soft drinks, and cotton candy were her specialty. She even competed and finished the 70 mile race a couple of times. In 2002, she was recipient of the First Lady of the Year award by the Beta Sigma Phi. During her life, she traveled to Africa a number of times. In 1968, she spent a year with her whole family in Ghana where she assisted her husband as a professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ghana. In 1974, she traveled to Tanzania to evaluate Rotary's Heifer Project. In 1982, she traveled back to Ghana to evaluate the Rotary Well Project. Later she accompanied the Rotary's GSE team in Nigeria. A memorial service will be held at the Bainbridge United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 27 North Main St., Bainbridge, NY 13733. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family online at www.landersfh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

To all the Bensons, we'd like to express our condolences during your time of loss. We were very fortunate to have been tenants above the clinic and were always amazed by Jane & Ken's warmth, humor and compassion. We will never forget the surprise house warming party arranged by Jane when we purchased our first home in Bainbridge and the invitations to family parties @ the Smith's. We're blessed to have crossed paths with this remarkable family!

Dr. Jane Benson was the tallest little lady I ever met. She knew so much and helped me so often with my pets. When she instructed me I just about saluted out of respect for her knowledge and caring of all animals. Barefoot from the house she would come over to the office and immediately take charge. She had a sense of humor that often caught me off guard. Both Dr. Bensons will be remembered forever in our community - how blessed we all were to have them for so long. Sincerely.

Jane was, in short, remarkable. She did so much with her life, many will continue to be inspired. And horizons will expand. Jane always thought for herself, yet was a team player in meeting needs and accomplishing community goals. We will miss her deeply.

My deepest condolences to the Benson family. I can remember many times bringing my dog and cat to her and having her go right to the problem. When I had to euthanize my beloved dog she allowed me to hold her while she passed on. Never have I known some with such compassion. You will be truly missed.

I have moved from the upstate area, and just learned of Jane's passing. My husband, Herb, and I took care of strays in the Afton, and Bainbridge area for many years. Jane was not only our personal vet, she ministered to the strays who were sick, and injured.
She never once said to us, " It is only a stray", but set to work caring for that animal. One, a brindle boxer female, was near death from porcupine quills, long embedded, and all over her body. Jane and I stood for hours, literally, pulling quills from that hapless dog. We decided to adopt the old dog, and told Jane to send us a bill. She said, "No Joan. It was my pleasure." Jane was selfless with animals, and much loved by our family for that reason. I am so sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of Jane's passing. She was loved by many. I remember just last December seeing her in the car at the Great American, and her telling me she still remembered the clock radio Jim and I gave to them for their 50th anniversary. So sweet to remember that after all those years. She will be missed.

To the entire Benson family,
My heartfelt condolences to all of you.
You don't need me to say it but, the world has truly lost a wonderful person, she gave and gave and gave, along with Doc.
I am forever grateful to Jane for all she has done for my family over the many years I had the pleasure of knowing her.
Unlike ANY other veterinarian, her first consideration was ALWAYS, the animal. NEVER was the question asked, "can you afford this treatment?"
You will be forever remembered Jane, and sorely missed.

Leslie and family - although we only met your Mom once, her obituary certainly tells a lot about what a truly amazing woman she was - the world and her family were lucky to have her here for so long. So very sorry for your loss - Love, Aunt Jane and Uncle Julio

To the Benson Family, Your mom was one of kind! I enjoyed our time together at the United Methodist Homes where Jane was a long serving trustee, who always spoke her mind and provided excellent leadership and direction. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this time.
