Joseph Walsh Obituary

Walsh, Joseph (Joe) E., Sr.

Endicott: Joseph (Joe) E. Walsh, Sr. born July 15, 1930 of Endicott, NY (originally of Minooka, PA) was received into the loving embrace of our Lord on June 19, 2011 surrounded by his family following a two month illness. For 31 years, Joe taught 6th grade in the Union-Endicott School District beginning at Broad Street school, continuing on to the Henry B. Endicott and Charles F. Johnson schools and ending his career at the Ann G. McGuinness school in 1989. Joe graduated from Scranton Tech High School in 1948 where he was Senior Class President. Following high school, he served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. And following his military service, Joe enrolled in and graduated (with honors) from East Stroudsburg State Teacher's College in Stroudsburg, PA. Joe was married to the late Genevieve (Jeanne) Walsh (nee McAndrew - born Dunmore, PA and a 1951 graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing) for 36 years when she predeceased him following a lengthy bout with breast cancer in 1993. Joe was an active member of various organizations including Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, the Endicott American Legion, Post 1700 and The West-Endicott Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Commissioner for more than 20 years. As an avid vegetable gardener, Joe was known throughout the land for his prized tomato and garlic harvests. Joe leaves behind five children and their spouses, Maureen E. and Rocky S. Oppito (Endicott), Joseph E. Jr. and Joan Walsh (St. Louis, MO), Brian J. (and the late Jamie) Walsh (St. Louis, MO), Genevieve K. (formerly Ketchum) and Peter J. Kermidas (Endicott), and Kathleen B. and Anthony R. Quaranta (Apalachin, NY). He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, Robert, Mandy (Randis), Joseph and Melyssa Oppito, Joseph E., III and Grace Walsh, Ryan, Christopher, Michael, Brendan and Justin Ketchum, John and Daniel Kermidas and Anthony, Bridget, Edward and Nicholas Quaranta; as well as four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen (and the late Jack) May (Scranton, PA) and Mary (and Jack) Gower (Rockville, MD); two brothers and their wives, John and Cathy Walsh (Clarks Summit, PA) and Jerome and Nancy Walsh (Scranton, PA); two brothers-in-law, James J. (and the late Betty) McAndrew of Endicott and Edward and Norma McAndrew of Liberty, NY; three sisters-in-law, Irene and Walter Kunz of Dunmore, PA, Terry and Al Kresge of Tannersville, PA and Maureen and David Knoll of Belmont, MI; as well as nearly 60 nieces and nephews. Whether as the result of his travels the world over or from holding court on his beloved front porch, Joe was blessed to have amassed a vast and diverse collection of friends - each of whom greatly enriched his life and made it full. Joe was passionate about teaching and he derived immense pride and satisfaction from shaping and positively influencing the lives of so many of his students. He was reputed as a challenging, well-disciplined, fair and compassionate teacher who inspired his students to pursue their dreams and, along the way, demonstrate integrity and genuine regard for others. Shortly before his retirement, Joe received national recognition for his significant contributions as an educator. Joe's greatest pleasure and satisfaction in life, however, came from his lifelong romance with his beloved wife Jeanne (whom he missed dearly every day following her death) and the absolute joy brought to him through the pursuits and activities of his children and grandchildren. With grandchildren, Joe came to be known throughout his family as "Papa" - a name and title he cherished for its warmth and unmistakably high stature. Joe was a pious man and he lived each day as an unwavering and faithful steward in service to his faith. Family and friends are invited to call at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 East Main Street, Endicott, NY on Thursday, June 23, 2011, from 4 – 8 p.m. and a Catholic Mass of Christian burial will follow on Friday, June 24, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Good Counsel Church - Endicott. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the "Genevieve K. and Joseph E. Walsh, Sr." Scholarship Fund c/o Visions Federal Credit Union, 24 McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760. The fund has been established by the family to assist deserving, local high school graduates pursuing professional careers in the fields of nursing and education.

I recently learned of the passing of Mr. Walsh and wanted to express my condolences.
He was my elementary teacher, and one of only a few that had a huge impact on me over the years.
I’m now 48 and work as a coach/consultant but also work as an educator.
I recall Mr. Walsh as being a little strict, however, it provided me structure, clear expectations, and facilitated self accountability in me.
It took many years to realize the importance of those skills.
I have often wondered how he was doing and attempted to find him a couple times to share my gratitude. I hope this helps his family realize tge actual impact her had on his students.
Warm regards- Kathy (1990 UE graduate)

My thoughts and prayers go to Mr. Walsh's family. He was a unique teacher. Mr. Walsh was my 6th grade math teacher at Henry B. Endicott School. He always saw potential in all of his students, even if we gave up on ourselves. He always expected me to do my best in math and never give up. Now, I teach my math students to do their best, never give up and appreciate themselves as learners. Thank you Mr. Walsh.

Uncle Joe - you were and always will be a blessing in my life. As a Son, a Husband, a Father, an Uncle, and a Grandfather, you lived your life with honor, humility, love, and a tremendous gift of Faith. Your loving family is a living testament to your incredible life. As my Uncle, your guiding influence was always felt but more importantly, welcome. I will cherish the gift of our last visit always. I will miss you but feel comforted knowing that you are once again by Aunt Jean's side.

To Maureen and family, our family is deeply sadden by your loss. It is hard being left behind while members of our families have gone ahead to prepare for our coming. Knowing that that day will come is still not comforting. We each have our own job to do before it is our time. Just know, our families who have gone before us are with us to help and guide us. We were lucky to meet your father the few times he came to Maureen's shop. He left you with the feeling you had known him forever. May God bless you and be with you all.

Mr Walsh was my sixth grade reading and Math teacher at CFJ. He was one of the nicest teacher's I ever had. My first day going to class with glasses, I barely wanted to look up and as he passed out a paper to me, he made a big deal about how spiffy I looked and really lightened the situation. He knew how to have a structured learning environment yet he also made you feel like he was a favorite uncle. I know he adored his wife and I'm so happy they are finally together again.

To the Walsh Family- I spent one year at Broad St school and had the honor of having Mr. Walsh as my 6th grade teacher '60-61. He was a demanding but excellent teacher and I can say without hesitation that his desire to get the most of his students stuck with me throughout my lifetime.

To the Walsh Family,
What a wonderful Man your Dad was-kind, smart, funny and most of all loving. He always had a funny story to share! He was so proud of all of you-and his face would light up when he spoke of any one of you. Our condolences to you all.
Genevieve and Pete,
Special thoughts and love to both of you. Your wedding and just the thought of Genevieve being happy certainly brought him joy-and strength to hold on a little longer. Pete-he clearly thought the world of you and knew you would take care of Genevieve!

To the Walsh family, my deepest condolensces. I know he had been ill for a while, and now he is at peace. Mr. Walsh was my neighbor and friend for 25 years. I will miss his wit and funny comments, when I would see him outside. Usually him and Pete where toying with some project, or should I say Pete was working and Joe was supervising. The neighborhood will not be the same without him. I will truly miss him.

To The Walsh Family,
It is with much sadness that I write to you. I worked with Jeanne in the U-E sch. dist.(fellow school nurse), and that's how I got to know Joe, and most of the family..I used to call Jeanne (Mom), as my own mother had passed away, and she looked just like her...I am so very sorry for your loss..Joe was such a great man, who cherished, and loved his family so much..My oldest son had the pleasure of Joe teaching him @ CFJ...I am more familiar with the daughters, but I always knew what was going on with the boys too..To Genevieve, I see that you are now married to Pete...He is such a sweetheart, and I'm so happy for both of you. I'm sure that both your parents are happy for you also..With love and sympathy, Kathi(Olivieri)Decker..Ft.Myers Fl./Ocean City,Md.

Dear Genivieve, Maureen, Kathleen, Joe, and Brian,

Our heart-felt condolences on the loss of your father.
Our thoughts go out as well to all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who have lost their grandfather.
And to you Pete, on the loss of your father-in-law,
neighbor and friend. It is hard to imagine what a tremendous influence Joe must have had on so many lives, in- and outside of his family.

Joe, you have left us way too soon. Gone are the casual conversation (always educational), gardening tips, and good-natured ribbing that came my way when
I passed by your home. You will be missed, my friend.

With our deepest sympathies,

Jeff and Carla Fingar, and family

Altho I never knew him as a School Teacher, I feel so blessed to have known him as my Uncle- one who had a great love for my Godmother, and as a fine example of a strong and loving Father to my cousins (whom I feel very close to)- important Life Lessons that he taught me by his example.
I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor and the way he made everyone feel at ease around him- and anyone who grows garlic is alright in my book.
My love to all the family and our prayers for you to find the strength you need.

To the Walsh Family,
I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Walsh's passing. I grew up only houses away from Mr. Walsh. I loved how he always decorated those bushes out front the same way every Christmas. I also enjoyed knowing when I turned that corner that without a doubt, if the weather was nice, that I would get a friendly wave and a "hello" from Mr. Walsh as he sat on that front porch. And my kids grew up knowing they would get a wave as well .
It was heartwarming to see the amount of people that surrounded the house in the past week, both day and night.
My heart goes out to you all.

Dear Kathy, Tony, and the Walsh family: I have always held so much respect for Mr. Walsh and remember him as one of my favorite teachers. And anytime I ran into him after 6th grade (his class was my homeroom and Math class), I found him to be so huggable and a man with a beautiful smile and so endearing. I have thought about Mr. Walsh so, so many times throughout the years and will miss knowing that I won't be able to run into him again when I visit my hometown of Endicott. I will miss you very much Mr Walsh and you will always have a place in my heart!! To the Walsh family, I send my prayers and heartfelt condolences and hugs. Sincerely, Dina (Mucilli) Casella

Sorry to hear of Mr Walsh's passing. I had him as a 6th grade teacher in Broad St school. He was like a giant to me, his feet, his hands his deep voice meant business. Many years later I ran into your Father at a friends mothers funeral. The only difference was this time I was all gray and we could share a laugh but, I still referred to him as MR Walsh. To the Walsh Family,
My heart goes out to all of you. My prayers will be with you through this difficult time. I understand the depth of this loss because I loved Joe too. Christmas won't be the same for me with out seeing him at Kelly's with all of you surrounding him at the largest table in the back room. My favorite memmory is the day I came to pick up Jamie for a ride in my 1949 Buick and spent an hour talking with Joe on the famous front porch. The chatter in the neighborhood the day after was that Joe had a mysterious women in his life. I was honored to be the accused. We had many laughs over that day for years to come. Your Father was an exceptional individual who will never be forgotten. You made his life so rich. You all appreciated him so much and he knew it. God Bless all of you. Joe lives on through Each and every Walsh!
