Kathy Bergin

Kathy Bergin
of Binghamton
Kathleen Theresa Bergin, 62, of Binghamton, passed away peacefully at Wilson Regional Medical Center on September 19 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Regis and Cecilia (Bowden) Bergin; and brother-in-law, Joseph Medwetz. She is survived by her loving brothers and sisters, Marlene and David West, Barbara Medwetz, John and Betty Bergin, Mary Lou and Ronald Law, Christine and William Curley, William and Roberta Bergin, and Elizabeth and Robert Connerton. She was very proud of her 21 nieces and nephews, whom she loved and bragged of as if they were her own. She is also survived by her aunt and Godmother, Mary (Bowden) Neylan; 24 precious grandnieces and grandnephews and many loving Bowden and Bergin cousins. She also leaves behind special friend, Rocco Stento; as well as her canine companion, "Lucy". She had countless friends who bridged generations - toddler to elderly and in between. She touched many lives with her big heart and generous spirit. Kathy was the owner and operator of Kathy Bergin's Beauty Salon & House of Wigs. She had a special dedication to the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better" program in which she volunteered for many years and became a NY State trainer for other hairdressers. Being able to help other women through the effects of cancer treatment was very important to her. She was a 1966 graduate of Catholic Central High School and a 1969 graduate of the Triple Cities School of Beauty Culture. She was a member of the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Binghamton, the Moose Club, and a social member of the Sons of Italy. Kathy lived life to the fullest and lit up every room she entered with that beautiful smile that was so characteristic of her. She will be sorely missed by all. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kalid Sethi, the staff of Wilson Regional Medical Center's ER, OR, ICU, and South Tower 5, as well as Lourdes Hospice program and the many friends and loving cousins who supported us with such compassion during this difficult time. "Dance as if no one were watching, sing as if no one were listening, and live every day as if it were your last."
A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Avenue, Binghamton, Thursday at 12 noon. Burial will be in St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Little Meadows, PA. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations specifically to the "Look Good, Feel Better" Program c/o American Cancer Society, 13 Beech Street, Johnson City, NY 13790 or Loaves and Fishes Pantry, 9 Livingston Street, Binghamton, NY 13903.

To the Bergin family,
I am so sorry to hear of Kathys passing, I remember meeting her when i was a little girl, she was good friends with my mom and dad, Will&Joan Tomanek. I lost contact &reunited with her a few months before she passed. When i saw her she had a big smile(as she always did) and gave me the biggest hug and told me how much she loved me and how much she missed my parents. Right now Kathy is probably with my mom&dad laughing, having a drink and having the best time ever! She was the sweetest, happiest, most caring, considerate and kindest person you could ever meet. I will always miss you Kathy. I love you and say hi to my parents for me. Love Ann Tomanek-Crawford

To All The Bergin Family,
So very sorry we were not able to pay our last respects to Kathy. We just returned from a three week cruise and feel very sad. Kathy had a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. She went out of her way to help people feel good about themselves again. She will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, "Bergie"

Fly, fly little wing
Fly beyond imagining
The softest cloud, the whitest dove
Upon the wind of heaven's love
Past the planets and the stars
Leave this lonely world of ours
Escape the sorrow and the pain
And fly again

Fly, fly precious one
Your endless journey has begun
Take your gentle happiness
Far too beautiful for this
Cross over to the other shore
There is peace forevermore
But hold this mem'ry bittersweet
Until we meet

Fly, fly do not fear
Don't waste a breath, don't shed a tear
Your heart is pure, your soul is free
Be on your way, don't wait for me
Above the universe you'll climb
On beyond the hands of time
The moon will rise, the sun will set
But I won't forget

Fly, fly little wing
Fly where only angels sing
Fly away, the time is right
Go now, find the light

The following is a question posed for the audience to ponder in the famous play OUR TOWN by Thornton Wilder...
"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?--every, every minute?" Well, I think it is safe to say that Kathy did!

To Live In The Hearts Of Others Is Not to Die. In my Heart you will stay until we meet again.
In a particularly dark period of my life, it was your Voice(a little too loud)HaHa, and your Smile (a little too bright),that illuminated my path. But most importantly it was your "un-conditional" friendship that helped me turn "that corner". Thank you.
Of course you know (especially now) how deep my Gratitude runs. I just wanted others to know too.

Dear Bob, Betty and Bergin Family,
My heart aches for you. Cathy was like a beautiful rainbow in the sky. She had many talents but her ability to make women look beautiful was beyond belief. I will always remember her for taking some of the pain away from my family when we lost my sister and she did her hair and she looked like a Princess. I think sometimes we forget how beautiful are loved one are.. We are so lucky that she touched our lives.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your sister. I never met Kathy, but all I can say is WOW! By all the wonderful things that were written about her in the guest book, I would have to say she was a wonderful, kind, caring, fun-loving, generous person. Our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the Bergin family. Over the years our old troop of kids has moved or drifted away. But on occasion there are those re-connections at Mass or happen chance when shopping or at the AOH! and sadly at funerals. The Bergins were a part of our lives growing up. Kathy will always live in those great memories of our childhood playing in the Vestal and Tremont Ave. neighborhood. Please know that we care and send our prayers during this sad time.

Flashback Kathy Bergin was my one of my dearest friends ever since the first day at Catholic Central in 10th grade. Smith's, Westerly Way, skipping classes to go to the movies with Nancy Buckley and Marj Ryan -- too many memories of our times together are flooding my mind. It will take years to laugh at them all. Memories to last a lifetime. Love you KT. Thanks for the fun and friendship. My best to the whole family.

To the Bergin Family - we were deeply saddened to hear about Kathy. I have nothing but the fondest memories of Kathy...especially when visiting my Grandmother as a kid. She always loved the way Kathy did her hair and how she could sit there for hours and just talk with Kathy. She was a staple in our route to Grandma's. It's sad to think she won't be on that corner anymore. Until we meet again Kathy...

To the Bergin family and all who were close to Kathy:
I am so very sorry for your loss. I met Kathy many years ago when we were in our 20's. She was so much fun and full of life, someone you would always remember and bring a smile to your face doing so. Years passed and I had not seen her but her name came up when my sister was going through cancer treatments and she went to Kathy for advice. My sister thought the world of her because Kathy had helped her tremendously. We lost my sister, but we were forever greatful to Kathy for her compassion towards her. She will be sorely missed and yes, another angel will be smiling down upon us all.
Rest in Peace.

This is for all those who loved and knew Kathy. This is for all who read this poem.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them; but then an entire life to forget them.
Kathy will never be forgotten because she was loved so well and because she loved so much.

To the family of Kathy, I was so sad when I read of her passing. What an amazing gal she was. I met her through the Cosmetology Assoc. we served on the board together for years. Her dedication to our affiliate went above and beyond. The laughter we all had will never be forgotten. I was blessed to meet her again years later at a Christmas Party at Downes Ave. and few times thru out the years after that. Her smile, beautiful eyes and dark hair, she had not changed. It was just like I had seen her the day before. I wish her godspeed. The lucky angels in heaven. "Thanks for the memories Kathy"

I have loved Kathy Bergin since the first day that I met her, which was in the 9th grade at Cathololic Central. Every day was an adventure with her. My memories of her are all wonderful, especially two of them. One Friday night we were bored and Kathy called the police and said she was Sister Agnes Clair, and to please hurry and send some police because a man is trying to break into the convent. Of course the two of us sat accross the street and had a good laugh! My other favorite was when I was in Binghamton Central and the office would call me down about once a month, and they told me that my mother wanted me home right away. When I came out of the building there was Bergie laughing and off we went shopping or to a movie:)

Heaven must have gotten boring and that is why God took her from us.

To all of the Kathy's family, please know that you have been, and will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Rest in Peace Kathy. Flags hang at half mast on the South Side of Binghamton as one of our most beloved members moves on to her next journey! All of us who knew you were fortunate enough to learn how important it is to celebrate life! In your honor we promise to continue that celebration. Your presence here was a gift and blessing to us all!

To all of Kathy's family,
You have my deepest sympathy. My memory of Kathy will always be her beautiful smile and upbeat personality. I will certainly remember her in Mass. "It is in dying that we are born to eternal life."

Dear Family,
My prayers are with you all on the loss of a great friend and supporter of my priestly ministry at St. John's from 1969-1970 and 2002-2008.
She made my head look great. I will pray for her soul at Mass on the day of her Mass of Christian Burial. My thoughts are with all of you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. John E. Mikalajunas, Utica

I am so sad for all of you guys. Kathy was the greatest. I remember the night she called my mom and saud 'this is Kathleen Theresa Bergin, I have your daughter, we are all going to the drive-in. This is not a request, I just wanted you to know where she'll be". We went to the drive-in in that gigantic yellow cadillac convertible. I'm sure there is no one who's path Kathy crossed that could say one cross word about her. I am so sorry for your loss and am sure Kathy's legacy will live on forever.
Love and peace to you all,
Mimi

To The Bergin Family: A tragic event for all of you to endure. My prayers go out to you. She was a special caring person. Helping so many of her customers including my own grandmother always look their best. May all the memories hold her forever in our thoughts. May she rest in eternal peace. A light to all.

To The Bergin Family et al: Kathy will be missed by all who knew her and even those who did not know her but benefitted from her good works. She was an u\nique person. She loved life and enjoyed it. Like the good aunt that she was she loved the neices and nephews and the grandnieces and grandnephews. Kathy you might say was a legend in her own time. God must have needed a hair stylist par excellance so He called Kathy home. May God give you the strength to walk through this vale of tears as we continue our journey to our eternal reward. May Kathy rest in peace. May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

A promise of prayers for the entire Begin clan and all who knew and loved Kathy. I know that as she watched over and cared for all of you here on earth, that she will continue to direct and guide and intercede for you from the throne of God in Heaven. May she rest in peace!!
