Linda Cahill Obituary

Cahill, Linda Griffin

Endwell: Linda Griffin Cahill, Endwell, wife of James N. Cahill, beloved sister, aunt and exuberant friend of many, died on February 16, 2013. Her death is sudden, unexpected and tragic for all who knew and loved her. An accomplished pianist and organist, Griffin inherited her passion for music, particularly opera, from her mother, Madeline Santa Lucia, a Juilliard School-trained lyric soprano. Griffin grew up on the Santa Lucia family farm in Kirkwood, NY. As a little girl, she harvested hay and corn and rode her horse, Gussie. She gained her skill with animals from her beloved Aunt Eleanor. After graduating from The Crane School of Music SUNY Potsdam, Griffin began a long career in the Union Endicott School District, fostering a love of music in more than 1,000 pupils per year. In 1998 she was voted one of the Best Teachers in America by Who's Who Among American Teachers. Griffin's fervor for music ranged far beyond the classroom. She was an ardent supporter of the New York Metropolitan Opera, Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, singers, conductors and an army of amateur friends and family whom she educated with tolerant enthusiasm. From her Italian mother Griffin acquired her talent for music; because of her Irish father, Neil Griffin, she fell in love with all things Irish. A self-taught bagpiper, three decades ago she and Douglas Arnott founded Broome County Pipes and Drums. It is impossible to count the many parades, weddings, funerals and fundraisers Griffin and the band piped through grief or celebration. Opera and music were but two of her passions. Griffin loved animals and all animals loved her. On her own initiative, with her famous dog, Hugo, she created a therapeutic program that comforted the ill and disabled throughout Broome County. Griffin is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Joseph Griffin. She is survived by her husband, Jim; her stepsons, Peter and Zachary Cahill; step grandchildren, Caitlin and Connor Cahill; brothers, Michael (Joan) Griffin, Windsor, Thomas Griffin, Kirkwood; sisters, Tonetta (Norman) Wallen and Patricia Griffin, Kirkwood; sisters-in-law, Pat Griffin, Cathleen Barber, Margaret Cahill, Ellen McDonough, Mary Jane Salk; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Griffin will also be mourned by her thousands of former students; the Independent Mutual Aid Society, of which she was vice president; her fellow pipers, singers and musicians; neighborhood dogs, feeding songbirds and feral cats. We will never forget the rowdy sing-alongs, the fearless cooking, the dinner parties, the hearty laughs, open door and open heart. Here's to you, Griff. You always were and will be the life of every party. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, Thursday, February 21, 4-7 p.m., with the Independent Mutual Aid Society meeting at 6:45 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Allen Memorial Home, Friday, February 22, 10:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St Anthony of Padua Church, 306 Odell Avenue, Endicott. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joseph A. Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Broome County Government Security, PO Box 1766, 44 Hawley Street, Binghamton, NY 13902.

Dear Griffin,
I think of you often...
I so miss our long talks about everything under the sun on your breezy side porch.
Birds chirping, wine, snacks, bruschetta(my fave!!),complete with your homegrown tomatoes & garden herbs, opera playing in the background, gentle Henry nearby...
I so miss your ready laugh, wise counsel, good humor, wonderful stories and your lovely friendship.
Until we meet again my friend...

I had Ms. Cahill as a music teacher at a very young age (while living in Endicott), maybe 4th grade. I still remember her from those days and love music to this day. She was a very kind woman, I'm sorry to hear of her passing. May God's grace comfort you in this time of sorrow.

Jim, Family,and Friends
Finding the right words to offer you escape me. Knowing that Griffin leaves behind a husband, family, and friends who are so much richer in spirit for having known her....is the only way we can go on without her. May peace settle on you all as we keep her alive by remembering her ability to make us smile and be just a little bit better for having known her.

To the Griffin and Cahill families, I am so sorry for your loss. Linda and I were in school from early grade school through graduation from high school. She was always an intelligent happy & fun friend. I have a picture with her in it at my 9th birthday party. Linda's mom gave me piano lessons at an early age. Linda was also a terrific music teacher and taught my granddaughter at GWJ. Linda's life was shortened here too soon. Prayers for all that God gives you peace during this difficult time.

Griff and I became friends in Grade School and shared many years of friendship. Love ya Griff! RIP

February 24, 2013

As an adult friend of Griffin's, I knew an incredibly unique and indefatigable person. On our annual summer visits home, my husband Miles and I would see Griffin & Jim at our family gatherings..Griffin was the life of the party..no...she WAS the party...the hearty laugh, the red hair flying and the big smile-we all gravitated to Griffin. Only she could talk Miles and me into leaving balmy Florida in March to watch her in the FREEZING NYC St. Patrick's parade. The parties will be quieter now in Endwell/Vestal but Heaven will be rockin' with Griffin on her pipes and piano. Maureen Hanafin Dearden

Jim,
Griffin will be missed. She was such a
wonderful person to stop and chat with
when I was out walking our dog or our
daughters dog. She had watched our dog
before it passed away when we would go
out of town. Will miss her but to know that she is resting in peace now in heaven. Our thoughts are with the Cahill and Griffin families.

One of my fondest memories of my childhood was music class at HBE with Mrs. Cahill. She was such a wonderful, kind, creative spirit that created special times and memories for many children. My 6 year old daughter tells me what she does in music class now... no way does it compare to what I experienced as a child with Mrs. Cahill. Such fun times we had singing, listening to her play guitar or piano... my favorite making shadow puppets sing! Creativity at its best and truly learning what music is about. So sad to hear of her passing, she will never be forgotten and for many, many people like myself... she is part of a wonderful memory of what it was like (and should be like) to be a child. My condolences to her family.

I was fortunate to work with Griffin at GHN for many years and had the room next door to her. As I am also a Linda, I give her credit for changing her name and making it easier for both of us! She would come into my classroom often singing, or asking 5th grade students about their ideas of recent music and was always there to listen and inspire others. She was a fine example of how music and life intertwine and she will be missed. Linda Wheeler (Watson)

Jim & Family,
Words cannot express how sad we are to hear of Linda's passing. She was my music teacher when she first graduated college and started her career at GHN school. I have many wonderful and fond memories of the chorus and plays I was in that she directed. She and I would often reminisce about those days. Later, Linda became my three children's music teacher at GFJ school as well as their piano teacher for many years. They loved going to your home to take lessons, to visit with her and hear her stories, to enjoy the animals she cared for and all the comings and goings there. It was always a warm and vibrant place. She has the most infectious and bright spirit. She touched so many with her love and light. She will be forever remembered, honored, and missed. We pray we will all be reunited some day with her in heaven to enjoy her music, bagpiping, and laughter. May God bless and comfort you all at this difficult time.

February 21, 2013

I had to share a story about Mrs. Cahill that still makes my family laugh to this day. When my sister was in 1st grade at GHN and I was in 3rd, Mrs. Cahill asked my sister what she got for Santa got her for Christmas? My sister, not believing in Santa, replied "nothing." Mrs. Cahill assumed that my parents didn't get us anything for Christmas, and she went out and bought us toys. When Mrs. Cahill presented them to me after class one day, I was very confused. She said "Your sister told me Santa didn't come to your house for Chrismas!?" It was then that I had to explain to her that my sister and I had the flu one year and watched our mother wrap all the presents on X-mas eve, so we knew that there wasn't a Santa, but we didn't want to spoil it for the other children who still believed. I don't know who was more embarrassed, me or her. It made for a really good laugh with my parents, who later called the school to confirm that we did in fact, receive gifts, probably too many.

I am devastated to learn of the passing of such a radiant light! My beloved father, Crawford Stahl, while he was Supervisor of Music in the Union-Endicott Schools, hired Griffin; and I remember what joy her exuberant, excellent teaching always brought to him and to so many! For a man who believed so deeply in music education, a shining star like Griffin was a true God-send. Our family sends its most loving sympathy to Griffin's family, and our great appreciation of her extraordinary gifts will continue always.

February 21, 2013

Jim, I just heard about your wife's death and wanted to let you know how very sorry I am for your loss. February 21, 2013

Having taught with Griffin at both GHN and GFJ, I have many fond memories of her. The one that stands out in my mind occurred soon after I was hired by UE. My 5th grade classroom was right next to Griffin's music room on the second floor. Griffin was known to wear some "funky" outfits to work which I really appreciated. My first day at Nichols she came and welcomed me. She then commented about what I was wearing, broke out in a big smile, and said, "I'm so glad you are here. Now they will have someone else to talk about besides me."
I'll try to keep it going for you Griffin.
I will also never be able to hear "Don Gato" or smell eucalyptus(the music room was filled with vases of it) without thinking of you. Korey still remembers all the words to the retirement song for Mrs. Shimmelfing. You were truly one of a kind!

No question, pipes and pianos are making noise in the skies, glad to have such a vivacious, talented, loving person among the angels. She is missed by so many lives she touched.
Reading the messages in her guest book leaves no doubt how she affected the lives of so many, in many different ways. Griffin, keep playing on. I hope the angels were ready for her. She will undoubtedly stir things up, and brighten the environment where ever she goes as she did while she was with us. I will miss searching through the bag pipes for that beautiful red hair. I wish for strength, to her family to endure the grief of her sudden loss.

I am so sad to hear this news! Miss Griffin was my music teacher at George H Nichols elementary school waaay back in the late 60's and early 70's...

She was one of those rare teachers that are in your life for such a short time, yet you remember them forever!!

I will always remember our George H Nichols chorus performace of the 12 days of
Christmas.....The choreography and costume design were really outstanding thanks to Miss Griiffin and her ability to engage the students, their parents and the PTA...

I'm shocked and saddened to hear of Mrs. Cahill's passing. She was loving and kind; her classes were the highlight of my school week. I have fond memories of her exuberant passion for music and for life, chorus performances, the portraits of composers along the walls, Danse Macabre on Halloween, and “candy questions.” Mrs. Cahill fed my passion for music as I progressed through George H. Nichols, and she inspired me and many other young girls to become strong, confident women.

My heartfelt condolences to her family.

Griffin was an inspiration for all...........Her beauty, both inside and out, her extraordinary talent on many levels, her zest for life, her deep love of family and friends, and her sincere interest in others will resonate in a myriad of ways in the days and years to come. No one who was touched by Griffin will ever forget how blessed they are because of her. This loss is unthinkable. I will miss our sing alongs in Phoenix, our chats in Parisian cafes and regret that we never made it to Ireland together. May God embrace you in his arms, cousin, and may you find peace, without pain, at last.

Mrs. Cahill was my music teacher and was a great neighbor. I'll remember her for many things. I recall she had pictures of many composers on the wall - one guy with green hair. I'll remember her playing Danse Macabre every Halloween. Oh and every Halloween she would require the trick-or-treaters to sing a song to receive candy. I recall her stacking some fundraiser with 100 tickets so she could essentially guarantee she would win the Lou Holtz signed football. Thanks for the great memories! We'll miss you.

I was fortunate to have Ms. Cahill as a music teacher at HBE & then GHN & I loved to sing her creative songs, but my favorite memory of her is from after having moved on to junior high school. My friend & I were walking through her neighborhood & decided to stop by & say hello. We were shy about it, but of course were warmly welcomed inside & after having a song played for us on her gorgeous piano, we forgot about our shyness. We had recently begun the awkward process of eyebrow plucking, and it showed ; )) She kindly gave us an impromptu lesson on the proper technique & sent us off with a piece of wisdom others may have been hesitant to offer two blossoming girls. So sweet of her & I will never forget that moment.

Mrs. Cahill was our daughters' music teacher at GHN. Our youngest daughter, Jamie, astounded us when she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the retirement of one of the school personnel after Mrs. Cahill's coaching. We did not even know she could sing like that as we sat with our mouths hanging open. She was able to bring out the best in her students and instill a profound love of music at the same time. Our daughter still loves music and singing. What a wonderful teacher she was.

Miss Griffin taught me music in the '70s at George H. Nichols. She was the best. I remember her swiping on bright red lipstick with an exaggerated gesture and threatening to kiss the boys if they didn't sing louder. I learned Saint-Saens Danse Macabre on the piano in high school because I remembered it from the deliciously creepy filmstrip Miss Griffin showed us every Halloween. I know our country's folks music because Miss Griffin taught us This is Land is Your Land and the Erie Canal and so many others. I sing my own kids silly songs--The Underwear Song set to "Over There", "Mr. Jaws" set to "The Entertainer"--that I learned 35 years ago from Miss Griffin. I first learned what a round was and became fascinated by it in Miss Griffin's classroom. My life is enriched because Miss Griffin existed in it.

I echo many of the same sentiments of other former students here! Mrs. Cahill was one of a kind. I always looked forward to trick-or-treating to her house and singing for candy. She was such an inspiration and fostered a love for music in all her students. Prayers to her family as she will be missed by many.

I was very saddened and shocked when I heard about 'Ms. Giffin'. It's been 40 plus years ago since GHN and she has clearly touched many lives as well as my own. I have so many fond memories~I will always remember her hearty laugh, super smile, all the silly songs, trick or treating (trying to think up the perfect song to sing), walking to the trailor to see her for music class in the lot of GHN, applying her bright red lipstick prior to get someone's cheek and walking her dog in the neighborhood...she made everyone feel so special! She remembered everyone's name- I know she kept me and my 5 sisters straight and of course my brother. I couldn't wait to sub so I could see her again. My heart is broken and may your family find some comfort while reading the many stories from her 'fans'. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Eternal memory, Ms. Griffin!

I will always remember Mrs. Cahill as one of my favorite teachers...I will never forget our 5th grade concert when technical difficulties forced a break in the show...Mrs. Cahill played poker in the cafeteria with all of us to help pass the time...its little things like that you never forget...she will be greatly missed!

When I was a little girl in Griffin Cahill's music class at HBE, I didn't just fall in love with music--I fell in love with HER. To me, she epitomized style and sophistication, playfulness and passion, and was exactly what I thought a real woman of the world should be-- she was my Audrey Hepburn. May her light continue to burn bright in the hearts of all those who were blessed enough to know her. She remains ever an inspiration in my life.

Wow, I had Ms. Griffen a good 36-38 years ago at GHN. She was an amazing music teacher, who made me look forward to music class. We sang plenty of show tunes, and she always made it interesting, telling the back-story of the musical, the songs, etc. Best-loved were the chorus musicals we put on. I just spent the day reminiscing with my fellow GHN grads about out musicals. What a joy she was and how lucky we were to have her as a teacher!

Dear Cahill Family,
I was a student of Mrs. Cahill's and I loved every minute of her class! She even held my hand as I was terrified of my 1st ever experience with a big school fire drill, being a young 1st grader, she was so sweet and comforting with her great smile. I am a better person for knowing and being taught by her. My favorite time in her class at GHN was Halloween because she showed that scary skeleton, movie with the awesome music! Years later, my college class and I heard her and her bagpipers play at our Graduation. I am so sorry for your loss, prayers for your comfort at this most difficult time.

For me, this is the biggest shock I have encountered in a long time. Griffin was a long-time family friend. I made her first organ recital recording and knew her mother and family well. I took care of her beloved Steinway piano for many years. Griffin was one of the most positive and life-loving people I have ever known. It is like a very bright light has been extinguished. My wife was her first piano teacher. We all have such wonderful memories of parties and events, and never will we forget Griffin and friends, with their bagpipes, coming down the street when my daughter graduated from Vestal. The memories are warm and sweeet and we extend to the Cahill family our sincere sadness in their loss - and our loss. Griffin is not replaceable as she was one of a kind. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am terribly saddened by the news of Miss Griffin's passing. I, as many others, have fond memories of her wonderful musical teachings throughout my years at GHN. I remember her music room at the end of the hall and how much I loved going to class as she was ALWAYS happy and full of life and put everything into her time with the students.
I pray that peace will surround her family and that God's love will shine on all who loved her.

All three of our children, Chanda, Jocelyn and Eric were fortunate to have Mrs. Cahill for music at GHN. She was a talented teacher with the gift of laughter and music. We were all blessed to have had her in our lives. In our family she will always be remembered for her bagpipes filling the halls of GHN. She will be sorely missed.

She was my teacher and my next door neighbor. She would let me ride my bike up and down her driveway. I remember making wine with her husband. I will never forget hearing her play the bagpipes outside on a warm summer day. Her classes were what every student looked forward to. I even remember the class pet! Oh my! I even "ran away from home" and went to go live with her, haha. I looked up to her. She was so sweet, she would sit in the bathroom with her dog on the 4th of July since he was afarid of the fireworks. There are things she told me I will NEVER forget. I can remember full conversations with her. I am truely saddened. She will be remembered.

There are no words it feels that can provide comfort at a time like this - but please know the thoughts and prayers of the Ousterout family are with you. I am so honored to have had Mrs. Cahill be the first to escort my husband and I out of the church on the day of our wedding. I wish I could have thanked her more for the countless gardening tips, bags of herbs, and training advice for our dog that she gave to me. Know that she was loved and will be missed. My heart will remember her fondly each time I hear those bagpipes play...

I will miss her deeply, I joined the pipe band shortly after forming, Griff was always a huge personality for us, endless jokes, that were Good! She was a gifted instructor, especially for us adults. Griff was a riot no matter what the topic of discussion, usually with no filter. I will miss that alot. She made me laugh every week for decades! Her ability to be so precise on the music alwasy impressed me, if we couldn't understand, she would find a piano and demostrate it. Beautiful person that will be missed a great deal.

Dear Justin,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss! She was a very special person and one of the most gifted teachers I have ever known. Please share my condolences with your entire family. Sincerely, Jane Shear

We are shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Linda Griffin Cahill. We are lucky enough to have had her as a colleague and teacher of our children. Whenever any of our three sons came home on "music" day there was a smile on his face and a story to tell. Linda loved her world of music and you were part of it whenever she was near. Our world is a much better place for having had her in it. We can hear her "bagpipe" band starting already.

I have such wonderful memories of Mrs. Cahill's music class at AGM. She opened my ears and my heart to all new kinds of music, dance, and dramatic arts. When I became a teacher myself, I contacted Mrs.Cahill to ask for a copy of a certain song she had introduced to me in fourth grade and I wanted to share it with my own students. In reply, she sent me a 90 minute tape full of the silliest, funniest, most amazing songs. I was, and still am, so grateful for the love of music she instilled in me. She will definitely be missed.

I was privileged to be a student of Mrs.Cahill. I was fortunate enough to live within proximity of the sound of her bagpipes and to see her pass by on walks with her beautiful dog. She will be missed and remembered.
