Paul Oswald Obituary

Oswald, Paul Ludwig George

Paul, 76, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, February 27, 2015. Paul is survived by; his wife of 45 years, Lois (Birdsall) Oswald of Conklin, NY; daughter Marie Karasin and her husband Alan of Ithaca, NY; son Paul Oswald and his wife Asako Kohno Oswald of Toyko, Japan; his brother George "Ozzie" Oswald and his wife Rose of Windsor, NY; his brother Adrian "Mitch" Miller and his wife Diane of Deposit, NY; three beautiful granddaughters: Allison Karasin, Mariana Karasin & Erica Kohno Oswald; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His sisters, Agnes Kellner of Pine Bush, NY, and Genevieve Weitz of East Brunswick, NJ predecease him. The son of the late Ludwig Oswald and Elizabeth Kaiser Oswald, he was born on July 16, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY. The family moved in 1952 to The Farm in Deposit NY. He was a graduate of Deposit High School and Broome Community College with an electrical engineering degree and later studied at Syracuse University. He was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam as a consultant in radar technology. He worked as an electrical engineer at Burroughs, GE and Lockheed Electronics and Lockheed Sanders and retired in 1993. Paul was able to visit all 50 states and work in many countries such as Germany, Korea, Panama and Israel. Paul was a man of many talents. He wrestled in high school and studied judo in Vietnam achieving a brown belt. Paul was a counselor working with inmates in the Philadelphia prison system, teaching them to make better decisions when they were released. He loved music, especially Bluegrass & folk music and played guitar with the Java Joe Jammers in Binghamton, NY. He restored a Jaguar XKE, rode a Harley, and loved working with his tractors and backhoe. He created ponds so deer could have a water source without having to cross the road to get to the river and once planted a quarter mile of pumpkins for fun. Paul traveled the United States pulling his "silver blob" trailer behind his car during his bachelor consulting days. This gave him the idea to become a mobile home park owner. He bought Pride Manor Mobile Home Park in Conklin, NY, in 1979 and managed it until 2006. During this time he and the family lived in NJ where he worked weekdays at Picatinny Arsenal. He built play areas and a shallow pond for winter ice-skating, providing skates for the kids. Every year, he would host a Christmas party for the children of the Park at a local skating rink. Since 2001, Paul enjoyed winters in Palm Coast, Florida, his second home. He chose this location because of the salt-water canals and to be close to Daytona where he could ride his Harley during Bike Week. Taking friends for boat rides on the St. Johns River to see alligators "up close" was always a thrill. He loved family and enjoyed spending time with relatives throughout the US and Germany. Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday at 11am at the Conklin Presbyterian Church, 1175 Conklin Road, Conklin, NY. The family will be there at 9:30am to receive friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Paul's name to the Conklin Presbyterian Building Fund PO Box 151, Conklin, NY 13748, which serves the local community in times of need, or Broome County Catholic Charities. I'm saddened by Paul's death but I know he and my Dad are hanging out cracking jokes and talking about the good old days! He was a great guy and I'm a better person for knowing him, he was my Dads best friend and my sisters Godfather. I will always have fond memories of the Oswalds!
