Durgala, Thomas M.
of Johnson City, NY, 80, passed away at his home on May 12, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Anna Durgala. He is survived by his beautiful bride of 61 years, Betty (Gerst) Durgala; and their children, Tina and William Wildey, Teri and James Dobrzynski, Scott Durgala and Beth Keene, David and Kimberley Durgala. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian and Kate Wildey, Sarah and Will Richmond, Shannon and Andrew Stowell, Jessie Dobrzynski, Jacob Durgala and Morgan Fairbanks, Lyza, Zac and Mack Durgala and great-grandchild, Kamden Durgala. He is also survived by his sister and brother, Sharon Cutusso and Norman Durgala, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom graduated from Union Endicott High School and was retired from IBM, where he worked for many years as a senior associate engineer. Hence, he was quite an inventor and the family "go-to" person for fixing things, finding a way to solve any type of problem or, as he put it "jack of all trades, master of none"- but anyone who knew him would not describe his abilities that way. He was always prepared to 'do the math' to make any hare-brained scheme the rest of us could dream up into a reality. He was, at one time, a professional photographer and was also an avid outdoorsman. Tom was a lifetime member of the NRA and a talented gunsmith, as well. He served in the Army National Guard for 9 years and was, rightfully, proud of that service. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering and re-designing everything he could get his hands on-just ask Dr. Harris! We will always cherish our time spent with him and will strive to honor his legacy of strength, wisdom and love. He treasured his wife and family and was always ready to help anyone in need. We will all miss him dearly. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Broome Oncology/Radiation Oncology and the entire staff of Lourdes Hospice for their care and support. At Tom's request, only a short committal service will be held for family members wishing to attend. The service will be held at Upper Lisle Cemetery, 6069 State Route 26, Whitney Point, NY on Wednesday, May 18th at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's memory to the American Cancer Society
, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
