Alan Scott Obituary

Dr. Alan B. Scott
Dr. Alan B Scott died on December 16, 2021, with his wife Jackie Lehmer and two of his daughters by his side. The cause of death was complications from sepsis. He was 89.
Early in his medical career, Alan conducted research on the botulinum toxin and its effect on muscles around the eye. Dr. Scott founded a company called Oculinum to produce a drug by the same name. In 1991 the pharmaceutical company Allergan purchased Dr. Scott's innovation and renamed it Botox. He was well respected by the international medical community.
In his free time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Jackie and cooking for family and friends. He was a voracious reader and connoisseur of fine wines. Alan had a sense of humor that livened up any conversation. He shared his knowledge graciously with his colleagues. His dance moves energized family gatherings.
Alan is survived by his wife Jackie Lehmer and his extended family. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Scott.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. His family, friends and colleagues loved him and he will be greatly missed.

I just met Mr Scott´s wife, a wonderful lady, and she humbly told us the story of her husbands research and development of what we now know as Botox. Great men accomplish great things and Mr Scott was obviously a giant among us. So I must offer my late condolences to his wife and family

My condolences and prayers for comfort and spiritual healing to Dr. Scott's wife and other members of his family. I will always be grateful for the excellent, thorough and compassionate medical care and treatment that Dr. Scott provided to me. I was born cross-eyed which improved slightly but all my life my eye muscles did not work together. Then an optometrist referred me to Dr. Scott and Dr. Scott did surgery on my eyes and fixed 4 muscles in my eyes and also my eyelids which were partially paralyzed due to hyperthyroidism. His work was so thorough and excellent that I was shocked, after the surgery, to see I had depth perception and that the world around me looked brighter simply because now I could raise my eyelids and my eyes worked together. Since I did not think my insurance would pay have my eyelids raised, I told Dr. Scott I would pay these costs myself. He said he would do this part of the surgery for free. I thought his offer to fix my lids was a blessing from God. In the end, my insurance paid for all of it because it was a medical and not a cosmetic problem. Dr. Scott examined my eyes for years and wrote prescriptions for eye glassses, though I knew he primarily worked on patients with special medical problems. I told him I would find an optometrist but he said my case was interesting. So I was glad he was not bored examining my eyes. I am also happy to read that he had a wonderful family and life in addition to his life as a medical scientist. Dr. Scott was brilliant and humble. He made a difference in my life. God blessed him with unusual medical talents and he used them well.

Our condolences to you and family. Dr. Alan Scott was the ophthalmologist for my two sons in San Francisco. I loved his personality and character. I also loved that he did not douse my boys eyes in dilation drops! He will certainly be missed by our family. I appreciate that their first introduction to eye care came from Dr. Scott.

I was only one of many thousands of Dr. Scott's patients, but an immensely grateful one. Not only was Dr. Scott skilled and helpful to me, he reminded me of how medicine used to be practiced. He took the time to discuss with me what was happening with my eyes, and why, and my options for dealing with the situation. He practiced medicine in a humane and human way -- one that I have rarely seen since I was a child. I was quite saddened to hear of Dr. Scott's passing and hope he is remembered not just as the inventor of a very useful and now popular treatment, but more so as a wonderful physician and human being. May his memory be a blessing to all his family and friends.

Dr. Scott began as an occasional mentor to me in 1996 during my studies in the field of strabismus. It was gradually over the years during my return visits to SF and at professional meeting venues elsewhere that I came to appreciate not only his sincerity, but more and more how truly kind he was as a person. An honestly great human being in so many aspects, professional as well as personal, it is with profound sadness that I see him part. His work and family life have appeared so consistently admirable to me; I simply have not known another embody so many of the qualities of a fine human with so many genuine contributions to medical science. I lose a mentor who became a dear friend, but retain his values in my memory. My sincere condolences to his family for which he so cared.

A dear friend of mine was a patient of Dr. Scott´s. She suffered from acute strabismus. After many injections over a period of time and then some surgery he corrected the situation. He was a gentleman - tremendously skilled, and a comforting warm doctor. He did for her what no one else could. It was my pleasure to meet him when I brought her to his office for the appointments.

Our family is so very saddened to hear of Alan´s death. Our hearts go out to all of the Scott family. Alan was such an interesting man, intelligent, gentle, kind and unassuming. He was easy to talk to and one of the most modest men we have ever known. We will miss him.

I just learned of Dr. Scott's passing from my father...today, 1/10/22. There so many things to be remembered, there are not enough words...
Dr. Alan Scott was a hero to me, and a dear, dear family friend of my father, Dr. Washington (Bob) Burns, retired in 2000, also of CPMC, and my mother, Paula Burns. Dr. Scott had the best, calming bedside manner, and always made me feel at ease, was always interested in my studies, and my endeavors. I first met him at age 11 at his office on Cherry St. in S.F. when I needed glasses, and he also diagnosed me to have colorblindness, not very common in females. He had a quiet wit, and quiet confidence about him that I always admired. In 1986, when I was a junior at Cal, I was in a terrible accident when a car ran a stop sign, causing me to be knocked off my bike, and suffered a head injury, causing concussion, traumatic strabismus, horrible headaches. He offered an injection into my eye, that was actually from the botox concept...his amazing pioneering I was able to be front row & center to hear about from him. I did not want it. He was so kind, and understanding. Instead, he prescribed a prism to be added to my corrective lenses, which stopped the headaches and double vision from my traumatic head injury. Even though I fell behind in my studies, I was able to endure and graduate on time from Cal because of Dr. Scott's help. He and dad were friends, we went to see him about 3 years ago when he was still at CPMC, he gave me the biggest hug...it made me cry. CPMC, (PMC to the old ganstas, lol), was my stomping ground as a kid, and visits to Dr. Scott's office were always common whenever I went to see my dad who was the Director of Laboratory Medicine, and a Clinical Pathologist at PMC - dad & Dr. Scott were tight...they were dear friends, and he treated the three of us not as patients, but as family. He is to me a hero, and will never be forgotten. I used to see his daughter on the Humphrey Go Bart shuttle when that was running on the Cal campus...she was a driver back then...Alison, I think it was...forgive me if I mixed up which daughter...but I always marveled at how much she resembled her dad. Delivering the annual mixed box of nine wines to Dr. Scott for holiday gift during December is another fun memory, because San Francisco back in the day wasn't as crowded, and going to the hospital was always fun for me. I and my parents, Bob & Paula are grateful for his kindnesses, friendship, and stellar medical care. Heartfelt condolences to all of his beloveds. Seeing dad and Dr. Scott sit and talk, laugh and remember PMC from the old days is a great memory...my current Ophthalmologist is a former medical student of Dr. Scott's, so I know I am in good hands. God Bless one & all. Thank You, Dr. Scott for your integrity, professionalism, friendship, and your one of a kind smile. You will be missed.

Much Love, Suzanne, Bob & Paula Burns.
