Carmen Root Obituary

ROOT, Carmen Wayne Age 77, passed away peacefully at his Santa Rosa residence on August 9, 2002 after a short, courageous battle against lung cancer. He was the cherished father of Bridget Root Kurz and her husband, Hans of Sonoma, Kevin Root of Alaska, and Maureen Austin of Windsor. He was the loving grandfather of Ryan and Scott Austin, and Max and Wolfgang Kurz. The beloved friend and former husband of Ruth Evans, of Santa Rosa. He was the brother of Lois Nelson of Santa Rosa and the late Eileen Teeple. The step-father of Betsy Evans of Cotati and Andrew Evans of British Columbia. The father-in-law of Chuck Austin of Sebastopol and brother-in-law of Aileen Andresen of Petaluma. Carmen was born to Clare and Zella Crawford Root in 1925 in Michigan. He received his B.A. from Michigan State, and his M.A. from Wayne State in Michigan. He was in the Air Corps from June 1943 to October 1945, where he successfully completed 37 missions in the European Theater. He was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf clusters and 3 Bronze Stars. When he returned from the war, he went into teaching. In 1959, he moved his family from Michigan to Santa Clara County, California where he continued his teaching career in Los Altos. Carmen also designed custom built swimming pools. He was an avid outdoorsman, lover of dogs, and enjoyed golfing. Friends and family are invited to attend a Graveside Service on Friday, August 16, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at Cypress Hill Memorial Park, 430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to Canine Companions for Independence, 2965 Dutton Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95407 in Carmen’s memory. Arrangements made by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Magnolia Ave. & Keokuk St., Petaluma, CA.
