David Castino Obituary

David G. Castino
December 22, 1960 - January 2, 2024
David Gregg Castino, beloved husband, father, mentor and businessman passed away suddenly on January 2, 2024 of a heart attack. He was born to Rita and David Castino Sr. in Santa Rosa on December 22, 1960.

Also known as David G. he attended Montgomery High School graduating in 1979. It was during his freshman year that he took a mechanical drawing class where he discovered a talent for drawing and design. This led to his 50-year career as a commercial kitchen designer and builder.

David G. began working for his father at Castino Restaurant Supply at the age of 13, spending many after-school nights and weekends there. After obtaining his contractor's license at age 21, David spent the rest of his career in the family business, taking over as president in 2003. David G. married the love of his life, Susan, on July 25, 1987. They met at Castino's in 1982 and worked there, side by side, for 42 years. They were blessed with two children, David Jr. in 1989 and Sarah in 1990. David G. was proud to work with both of his children when they also joined the business.

Dave started his career in the fire service in 1990 by becoming a volunteer firefighter with Rincon Valley Fire Protection District. During his time as a firefighter, he worked his way up the ranks. He became a Volunteer Lieutenant, Volunteer Captain, and a Part Time Paid Engineer. There was nothing Dave loved more than working shifts and driving the fire engines. Dave was a leader in the organization who mentored many young firefighters during his 30 year career. Dave's dedication to serving his community was never more evident than when he fought the Tubbs and Kincade Fires. His dedication never wavered even as he was losing his own home during the Tubbs Fire. Dave's strongest attribute was his love for family. The fire department was a second family to him which he loved almost as much as his own.

Along with his passion for designing kitchens and firefighting, David was also interested in music, playing the trumpet and French horn as a young teenager that paved the way of his lasting love for music, especially jazz. He was also a lifelong fisherman and would enjoy weeks long fishing trips every year with long-time fishing buddies, best friends, and children. Ultimately, his greatest passion and love was his family.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, son David Jr. (Brigette), and daughter Sarah. David is also survived by his father, David Castino, Sr. (Patricia), and mother Rita Okersterom; sister, Laurel Webster (Rob), brother Douglas Castino, and his stepbrothers and stepsister, along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, in-laws, and many friends. David is preceded in death by his step-father Steve Okersterom.

A memorial service for David will be held at the Luther Burbank Center of the Arts (50 Mark West Springs Rd, Santa Rosa, CA) on January 27th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. All friends and family wanting to remember David together are welcome to join.

I worked at Castino´s for a short time in the late 1980´s. David G. was always so friendly and professional and hard working that I was amazed that he was so grounded and helpful. David did a great job raising sons who in no way acted like the sons of a successful business owner. My condolences to all of his family and and friends.

I have many wonderful memories of David G he grew up in a very large and loving family. I didn´t know of his commitment to the community he lived in.
I have been a good friend to his Father for over many years since we first met in the early 70s and have many memories of his family over the years.
I know David G as a hard worker for his family business and new Susan when she worked at the family business.
I have met David Jr at the business and was very impressed by his demeanor and someone who will carry on and be a strong leader in the family business. I know that David G will be missed by his family and his strong commitment to his community.
May he be blessed and rest in eternal peace

I was shocked and saddened to see this bad news about Dave. We were in the band together at both Slater and Montgomery. Dave was a stand out musician and for a long time, the only French Horn player we had. He was very very good. He was a respectful student, reliable and a good guy to be around. He was great to have in band and as a classmate too. I was surprised to run into him later at Rincon Valley Fire as I never knew he had those interests. I know he was a great asset there and really enjoyed the work. Once I told the other fireman Dave was in the band and played French Horn (and very well), I realized the plan for some type of good natured tease was imminent. I can remember him being President of their association for a time, several years ago. My career was as a cop so I had an opportunity to work at the police academy when Rita was there assisting the Director, and we often spoke of Dave. She was very proud of him. To all the Castino family, I am very sorry for your heartbreak. Know as you do, that Dave was a great man, and a talented person in the many interests he pursued. I pray that God gives you strength and comfort at this tragic time. Many of us were very fortunate to have Dave as a friend and classmate, and we have great memories of him.

My condolences to David's family, and his many friends and associates. I first met David in the Pride organization, a national group of foodservice equipment dealers. David's passion for the business, and for our member's interests was quickly apparent, and it was a distinct pleasure to work with him during a rough transitional period. David was a good listener, and I found that he considered his words carefully and thoughtfully before he weighed in on any important matter. His quiet manner and understated humor was the mark of the man, for me. David gave of himself, and his passing is a loss...he was a very good man.
RIP, my friend.

It is with a heavy heart to have to write my feelings about David. He was such a wonderful friend and we are going to miss him greatly. My self and family became good friends with David when he started his firefighting career back in 1990. Anyone who had the opportunity to know and learn from him should feel blessed to have worked and learned from him. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace my dear friend!

The day that I arrived in Rohnert Park from the Southern California office was the craziest day. It was a closure of sorts with Doug and I didn´t know where to start. David G. sensed this and he pulled me aside and took me to my new office where there were so many things taking place in the transitional stages. But all I remember was calm from David that permeated my very being. He was a boss, a mentor, and a friend. I am cut to the deep with this loss and I know that nobody can replace him. I´m a better man for knowing him and I´m a more compassionate man for being formed by him. David, here´s a toast of Bombay Sapphire for you my friend. The earth lost a good soul and heaven gained an unconventional saint.

Your loving brother and friend, Gene Brown
