Gayle Brinker Obituary

On a windy, snowy lowa morning on February 5, 1936, Gayle made her grand entrance into the world! So grand, in fact, that her parents had to bring her home to the farm in a horse drawn sled over hills and fences because the roads were snowed shut. With an arrival that dramatic, it's no wonder she ended up with a name as bright and breezy as Gayle.

She first met the love of her life, Lynn, in 1955 through his sister in Carroll, lowa. A short courtship later, they married, started their family in Omaha, and then, because adventure was always part of their story, loaded four kids and their worldly belongings into a station wagon and headed west to Santa Rosa in 1963. In 1966, their last child arrived, making their family complete. They settled on Lynn Court, an irony she loved pointing out, and made Santa Rosa their home for the next 62 years.

Gayle quickly became part of the heart of St. Eugene's and began playing bridge in the 1960s with her lifelong friends Charlene, Jeanette, and Pam. While Lynn was out building businesses, Gayle ran the home front with a style all her own which were equal parts determined, glamorous, and delightfully sassy.

She and Lynn lived a life filled with sunshine and fun, spending treasured time in Hawaii, Palm Springs, Pebble Beach, and Tahoe. Gayle adored golf and was happiest teeing it up on a beautiful course by day and dressing to the nines for a gala by night. She rarely missed a 49ers or Giants game. True to form, she even lamented missing the Warriors play in the final hours of her life. Sports, sparkle, and spirit...that was our mom!

Her granddaughters will forever remember the thrill of sneaking into her closet to try on her glamorous gowns, furs, and jewels. Her wardrobe was practically a rite of passage. Gayle loved fashion, music, cooking, entertaining, and a good glass of wine at just the right time. She never said no to a game of bridge or euchre, and she was never one to turn down a trip to the casino.

Most of all, Gayle was deeply faithful. Her Catholic devotion was quiet the backbone of her life. As she was raising the children she cherished hosting family Mass in her home on Sundays followed by a lovely Sunday meal. She shared this devotion with her large lowa family, consisting of five sisters and brother (and her brother Fr. Darrel who passed) whom she remained close with until the day she died. Nothing made her happier than sharing calls, texts and occasional visits with her family. She was always reminding us that she was praying for us and anytime anyone needed extra prayers we could rest assured that she was on it!

After losing Lynn to a long battle with Alzheimer's in 2013, Gayle showed the strength and resilience that defined her. She survived the devastating 2017 fires, rebuilt her life once more, and settled into Oakmont, where she enjoyed her home, sitting outside admiring the views of the golf course, majestic mountains and abundant wildlife. She filled with family visits, lunches a peaceful but connected lifestyle with friends, and the occasional bridge game.

Gayle passed away extremely quickly after a sudden illness, a final act as decisive as the way she lived. She will be dearly missed, but always cherished.

She is survived by her five children, Doug Brinker (Ann), Dan Brinker (Julie), Shelly Nishimi (Ryne), Tammy Dyer (Charlie), Karen Rubattino (Rick), and her extraordinary legacy of 18 grand- children, 25 greatgrandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on January 31, 2026 at Star of the Valley Church, Santa Rosa, CA at 11:00 am.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.

I am saddened by the news of Gayle Brinker´s passing. She and her husband Lynn were dynamic members of St Eugene´s Cathedral. Their unrelenting support through the years - with Lynn doing the parish books at his office and Gayle an active parent in the school -- led to the dedication of an addition to the parish center named in honor of the Brinker family. Every parishioner knows the "Brinker Room" and has often attended meetings and socials in it. Not only were Gayle and Lynn devoted parishioners, they passed on to their children the same commitment. My condolences to my friends Dan and Julie and to the rest of that marvelous family.
