George SLEVIN Obituary

Dear husband of Virginia, son of the late George and Frances Kelly Slevin. A native of the City, George was the descendant of an old Mission district family whose great-grandfather, from Ireland, was a Police officer in San Francisco in the 1800's, and whose grandfather attended Sacred Heart College (now Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) in 1878. He leaves his family: Tom and Terry Slevin of Auburn, Joan and Steve Lynch of Tiburon, Nancy and Skip Latno of Sonoma, Cindy and Dan Gallagher of San Rafael and Aileen and Eric Wormood of Novato; also, his grandchildren, Kylee, Shannan and Conner Slevin; Molly, Ryan and Corey Lynch; Carter and Georgia Latno; Brynnagh and Taryn Gallagher; and Donovan and Gillian Wormood. He also leaves many loving cousins, nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. George was the brother of Phyllis Healy and the late Kathleen Hutchins Mattimore; the brother-in-law of Hank Mattimore, Mary Cole and Bernie and Sheila Maguire; also, the late Dermot Healy, Pat Maguire, Ed Cole, Catherine and Bill Healy, Eileen and Al Kirchner and Sabina Maguire. After service in Korea, George started his career in banking. He eventually owned his own company, Park Lane Mortgage, in San Rafael. He made many friends and brightened everyone's day with his big grin and good humor. He was a fourth generation Californian on the Kelly side, a third generation San Franciscan, a graduate of St. James High School and St. Mary's College. Go Gaels! Nine years ago, George suffered a serious health problem. At that time his youngest daughter, Aileen, wrote the following poem: "The Strongest Rock Our Dad is the strongest rock With the gentlest soul you'll ever know. He walks into a room without lights And somehow makes it glow. He sings off-key But he sings anyway. He lives his life by the adage 'Carpe Diem!' Seize the day! He's refined the art of the optimist Refusing to dwell on what's done. A million times I've heard him say 'tomorrow a new day will dawn'. Those who know George Slevin Might say That laughter defines Georgie Boy But in truth His humor is his instrument Helping others find their own joy. And now, I know He'll be seeing the signs of Spring In his childrens' eyes, in his grandchildren's laughter In his wife's heart And in the hope that each new day brings." George leaves a legacy of Joy, Love and Laughter. He was the "apple of our eyes". There will be a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, April 17th, 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo's Church, Agua Caliente Road, Sonoma.

Memories and Condolences
for George SLEVIN

Not sure what to say?

Dear Virginia,
I just learned this morning that George had died. I'm so sorry about your loss but know that in time memories of George will bring you more smiles than tears. On Easter Sunday I was playing some 40's tunes for the Sisters and when we came to "Side by Side" I told them about the many times I was at Slevin/Kelly gatherings when George and Kathleen would sing that song with much gusto and very little harmony. I have so many happy memories.
Promising you and all your family a remembrance in my prayers.
Love,
Sister Rosina

To Cindy and all the Slevins, (Maquires, Healy's, Coles, Mattimores and more...) --

Well they just don't make 'em like that anymore do they? What a wonderful tribute and moving description of a life well lived. Many, many thousands of people have laughed and smiled just a little bit more because of his walk on this earth... and continue to do so because of the legacy he gave to you, our dear Cindy, and every one of his children and grandchildren. I dare anyone NOT to smile, giggle or full-on belly laugh while in the presence of a Slevin. :-) Much love and warm condolences to you all.

Our prayers and condolences to Virginia and family.George and I went into the Army on the same day, November 10, 1952 but had known each other much before that. He was always the same, fun to be with, and always made you happy to have been with him. We later worked together in the Savings and Loan business and we continued to enjoy each other's company. Those of us that knew him well preferred "Chubby" to George and we are grateful for the times we had together. May he rest in peace.

We are sending our prayers and heartfelt condolences to the entire Slevin family. Cindy, your father sounds like he was such a wonderful man who really lived his life fully and well. It is obvious that you must have inherited his sense of humor and the ability to brighten the lives of others! What could be more important than raising 5 wonderful children to be thoughtful, caring and joyful adults? What could be better than to keep on enjoying life and with all its inevitable ups and downs? I am sure the granchildren gave and received much joy and love from your Dad (and your Mom of course)! We send love to the entire Slevin clan, especially to your Mom at this difficult time of loss. Bron and I and Christine and Katherine also send our love and special hugs to Brynnagh, Taryn, Cindy and Dan Gallagher. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in the days ahead.

I remember my first house in Marin and George was the loan broker. What a fabulous guy and how we'll all miss him.

George had an indomitable spirit of faith, hope, courage, humor and love of family that would light up the darkest corner of a room. He will be missed but his spirit will always be with us. My deepest condolences to Virginia and the family.
