Glendon Davis Obituary

DAVIS, Glendon Valley "Glen, " 89, passed away peacefully March 24, 2006 in Sonoma. Glen was born the son of a schoolteacher in Cambridge, Idaho on December 2, 1916. He was a star athlete and twice Idaho state tennis champion. He graduated from the University of Idaho and became a flight officer in the Army Air Corps in 1940. Serving in the European Theatre, he was awarded several medals as a P-51 Mustang fighter "ace". On his last mission, he parachuted into occupied central France when his engine failed. Several very brave French families hid him from the Germans for four months until the Resistance smuggled him back to England. Twenty years later, as a U.S. Air Force Officer, he returned to France to thank the French families for their courageous assistance. After World War II, Glen was a career Air Force officer, retiring in 1971 as Colonel. For several years, he had a real estate business in Healdsburg. An avid outdoorsman and golfer, he was a member of the Oakmont Community and Country Club. Glen is predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Sally, in 1987. He is survived by his sons Michael Davis, of Mill Valley and Patrick Davis of Napa; his four grandchildren Matthew, Alexander, Christopher and Nicholas, his sister Hilda Lackland, of Buehl, ID, and his companion of many years, Mary VerBurg, of Santa Rosa. Private interment services were already held for the family at the Santa Rosa Memorial Park, in Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Glen's honor can be made to Lifehouse, (serving the needs of developmentally disabled citizens in both Sonoma and Marin Counties) 18 Professional Way, San Rafael, CA 94903.
