So sorry to hear of John's passing.

October 27, 2008
Dear Margaret, Matt and Michael; I am truly sorry to hear that my friend John passed. I just returned from a week in South Carolina, so unfortunately I missed his memorial service. Fortunately, I was able to briefly chat with him a couple of weeks ago by phone, and he was his usual positive self that I have grown to know and admire. I understand that Michael wrote the obit for the Times Standard and I will have to say "job well done". John would be very pleased. I will miss him because we were always friends even though we worked for competing companies and we shared a lot of laughs over the years. He was always a gentleman with a sense of humour and stories that could not be matched. Our hearts go out to you all.
Love, Jim and Jan Brown

Dear Margaret and Family: I am so sorry to hear of your lose. I did not know John personally, but of coarse I knew of him and only heard wonderful things about him from PALCO employees and community members. Margaret, you were of great assistance to my husband and myself mailing off many packages from your new store. I remember how nice you were and how proud you spoke of John and his work in the community.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Ms. Margaret:
I worked at staying in contact with you and John over the past several years even though I have moved from Humboldt County. In my last conversation with John we talked about the TV Series AX MEN on Life working in the Woods. Over the years I read much about John and Timber, but more than that I built logging roads for PL and drove logging trucks on PL Land (as an independent contractor), so I knew about the land he ultimately managed.. More so, I knew John as someone I interviewed for News at KINS and spoke with on a continuing basis as a Human Rights Commissioner for Humboldt County. John was integral to the work of the commission during REDWOOD Summer. Most of all, Margaret, I enjoyed John on the personal level. He was a man of integrity in a world that kept him busy with work, pleasure and public service. I will miss him! You have my prayers…

To the Campbell family~
My dad, Cecil Mangrum, and brother, Kendall Mangrum both worked at PL for many years with John. He was truly a genuine person and always called everyone by their first name. That's the kind of guy he was.
I always enjoyed going with Lori to babysit you boys and I would bring my nephews, Reggie and Lars to play. Those were the good ole days back in Scotia.
The entire community lost a very good man.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mathew, Michael & families,
I'm thinking of you boys and all the happy memories I had with you and your family in Redway. I loved being a part of your life. Michael, I remember your dad always calling you "Little Tuffy" and Mathew we were always looking for your blanket, "Bubby". Your dad was a great man and I see alot of him in both of you. You're dad was so proud of you from the time you were born and now into the fine young men you've become.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
With Love, Lori & family

To the Campbell Family,
Please except our deepest sympathy for your great loss.
We were neighbors, two houses up from John and Cindy, back in the early 80's. I babysat Matthew and Michael a few times. I got a kick out of them playing 'PacMan' at our house. Sweet boys!! I caught a glimpse of them on the tv news of the Memorial (I wanted to go, but was not feeling well.) Matthew and Michael, you both have grown up into fine young men and I know you've brought your Dad and family great joy.
John was a great friend. Always ready with that wonderful 'Aussie' "Hi there, how's it goin!"
I worked at the Main office at PL for almost 10 yrs, doing the switchboard and janitor work. On my last day there, some of the gals in the office gave me a Ficus tree as a goodbye gift and a cake! I told them I wasn't retiring, just quitting! lol John came over to say goodbye and asked if I needed help in taking my tree home... before I could answer, the tree was in the open trunk of his car and on my front porch when I got home! That's the kind of friend John was...
(You will be missed by so many, John.....)
Keeping you, Margaret, Matthew, Michael and all the family in prayer for comfort (as only the Lord can give) during this difficult time.

Margaret,
I have fond memories of John. He was a true gentleman. I informed Frank Riggs of his passing and he recalled our many good times, support and conversations with John. You and I lost our husbands within one month (Mine September 26). We both sure picked winners, didn't we? I KNOW how you are feeling. Love.

John's family and his community lost a great man. I always admired his confident but yet humble demeanor. I remember growing up playing basketball with his son Matt, and Mike was a few years younger. Both Matt and Mike grew up to be fine men themselves as a result of their father's influence and leadership.

To the Campbell family,
John led a very adventurous and fullfilling life, all the while maintaining a personable and genuine nature and presence. Our families worked and socialized together throughout the "good years" and then we were very saddened to hear of his illness at such a very young age. John stayed strong and determined. His passing is a tremendous loss for this community and his entire family is in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Campbell Family: Margaret, Michael & Matthew
As someone who worked in the Main Office from 1961 through 1995, I had the great pleasure in working with many great individuals, but, one of my best acquaintenances was John. He and I had many conversations over the years while as my overall Boss, but, also with the Never Sweats ball teams and the Scotia Volunteer Fire Department. I have a lot of memories of various things that happened during his tenure in the office, both good and sometimes, not so good, but, I still admired John for all of his accomplishments, humor, friendship and most of all, his devotion to the The Pacific Lumber Company. I will keep John in my memory until the day that I pass on.
To the family, I send my most sincere sympathy and prayers to all of you. May God keep all of you in his love.

John was an inspiration to me. We spent time together while lobbying for the timber industry through the California Timber Association. We had many challenges and lots of fun. Especially while critiquing our attempts to persuade a representative or his/her staff. I'll miss John's sense of humor and his grin. Our hearts go out to his family.

Margaret,
I was very saddened to hear about John. I worked for many years with him at PALCO and I will always remember his laughter and humor. He never lost his Aussie accent and I can still hear him calling us "the gills". He will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him, and I am thankful to count myself as one of them. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family at this time.

Today I went surfing for you, John. You would have loved this day...clear, sunny, no wind, with a strong 4-foot swell. As I was sitting outside during lulls, I swear I saw your face a couple of times just off the nose of my board. We'll be friends 'til the waves stop rolling in. Joel Canzoneri

John was truly a good man. It was a pleasure seeing him and his son who played on the varsity basketball team at Fortuna High School. I knew him only as an executive at PL. It is refreshing to know that he worked his way up the ladder.
Blessings to his family, relatives and friends left behind.

I've never met John, but after reading the story of his life I can only imagine that his family & friends are mourning the loss of an incredible man who has touched so many lives while accomplishing so much in his own life. I've had the opportunity to work w/ one of John's son's, Michael for the past few years. I can see the resemblance in a fun loving, successful, driven person who's greatest thrill in life is helping as many people as he can. My Sincere Thoughts & Prayers to the Campbell Family and Friends.

Sincere sympathy to the family left behind. John will remain in my thoughts as the handsome gentlemen with the Australian accent who would walk in the bank and say "How are my princesses doing today?" Always positive and upbeat to the very end. He will be missed.

It is with great sadness that we learned of John's passing. We got to know John and Margaret quite well when we built their house for them in Fortuna; they both were a true pleasure to work for. John was the epitome of integrity and fairness, his handshake was better than any signed contract.

Margaret, Michael, Mathew and Family,
I hold you all in my thoughts. It was a pleasure to work with and get to know John over the past few years. He set the benchmark for community pride and service. His work ethic and lust for new knowledge was rivaled by few. I'll always remember that big smile and the warm greeting of a handshake followed closely by 'How you doing 'mate?. I'll miss him.
