Jon Breyfogle was born in 1945 in San Francisco to Alice and AF 'Bud' Breyfogle. He grew up in San Mateo, California, attending Hillsdale High School. There he completed Eagle Scouts and "The Order of the Arrow". He went on to college at UC Davis where he met Vina Breyfogle and earned a BS in Biology.

Jon and Vina married in 1967 and joined the Peace Corps, serving in Sierra Leone for 2 years. On returning to California, Jon and Vina settled in Penngrove, California where they raised three children, Helen, Peter, and Max.

Jon spent his early career working for Burton Engineers in Petaluma and Grippi Associates in San Rafael, earning his land surveying license. In 1987 he started his own surveying business, working locally and in Marin county.

Jon's two passions, hiking and our California coast, came together after he retired in 2003. He delved into intensive volunteering with Coastwalk, and walking the 1000-mile California Coastal Trail. In retirement he and Vina square danced weekly, read widely in their book club, enjoyed trips across the country in a camper van, a trip to Alaska with friends, yearly backpacking trips in the Sierras with friends, kayaking in Baja California and the San Juan islands, hiking and biking in the Czech republic, and a trip to Turkey and Greece with family. He has enjoyed frequent lunches with surveying buddies, and visits with family and grandchildren in Penngrove.

Jon is survived by his wife Vina, daughter Helen and her husband David, sons Peter and his wife Marian, and Max and his wife Helga, grandchildren Alden, Margaret, EJ, Katie, and Frances. Donations in his memory can be made to Coastwalk, California in Sebastopol. A celebration of his life is being held in Petaluma the Sunday after his passing.
