May Greenway Obituary

May Beth (Betty) Behrens Greenway
April 16, 1918 - December 20, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of May Beth (Betty) Behrens Greenway announces her passing on December 20, 2020, only four months shy of her 103rd birthday. Betty was born on April 16, 1918 (another pandemic year) to Albert P. and May (Cole) Behrens Sr. in Petaluma, California. The Behrens family first settled on a ranch near Petaluma in 1864. Both Betty and her brother, Albert P. Behrens Jr., attended Petaluma High School and Stanford University. It was at Stanford that Betty met her future husband, Frank L. Greenway Jr., who died in 1997 after 56 years of marriage.
Betty and Frank moved to Redlands, California in 1946 where Frank was Professor of Economics at the University of Redlands for 35 years. Betty lived in Redlands for 65 years where she was actively involved in UofR Faculty Wives, Town & Gown, Assistance League, P.E.O., Breakfast Club, several bridge groups, and community activities.
Betty moved to Spring Lake Village Retirement Community in Santa Rosa, CA in 2011. She volunteered for several committees and met many new friends. She continued to play bridge until Covid-19 prevented any further gatherings.
Betty is preceded in death by Albert and May Behrens (parents), Frank L. Greenway Jr. (husband), Albert P. Behrens Jr. (brother), Ben Osbun (son-in-law) and Robert Klein (son-in-law).
Betty is survived by her children Dr. Frank L. Greenway III, (Terry), Kathy Osbun, and Christie Klein; grandchildren, Dr. Scott Greenway (Christine), Katie Boyd (Rex), Greg Filler (Pam), Lenore Morrissey (Bob); and great-grandchildren Erik, Robert, Madelyn, Mackenzie, Gillian, Georgia, and Tessa. She leaves behind nieces, nephews, and many beloved friends. Betty/ Mom/Grandma/Gigi will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a grand lady who selflessly lived a full and active life.

My husband Tom and I met Frank and Betty on our honeymoon trip to Alaska and became life-long friends. We visited them in California and visited Betty again there years later. We considered ourselves lucky to have known them both. We still keep a picture of Betty, one of her grandsons, and his baby boy on our refrigerator.

Tom and I are so saddened to hear of Betty's passing. We were so concerned when we didn't hear from her at Christmas, nor from another letter we sent about a month ago. We met Frank and Betty on our honeymoon trip to Alaska almost 33 years ago. We visited them in Redlands once, also visiting their beach house. We visited Betty in Redlands another time also. We felt so close to them and maintained a warm friendship over all these many years. We still have a picture of her sitting on a sofa holding one of her great grandsons. We will miss Betty, but we know she did live a full and active life. We are so very sorry for the family's loss.

May you memories of Betty comfort all of you at this very sad time. All of us who knew Betty were always glad to see her. She & Al will be missed.
