Rodney Dunton Obituary

Rodney William Dunton of Petaluma passed away on September 19, 2009 at home. He was born on October 5, 1955 in Sacramento, CA to Richard I. Dunton and Grace D. Hunter. Rodney Dunton was a kind and loving person who lived a simple outdoor life. He lived and worked in Sonoma and Marin Counties for most of his life, but also spent a few years in Nevada. Where ever he lived, he was known by ranchers as a master builder of reliable fences and as an excellent ranch hand. Whatever work he took on, he would strive for perfection with the belief that good work was a beautiful thing. Being from a pioneer family of Petaluma, Rodney enjoyed a very strong interest in the history of the area as well as the genealogy of his large family. His family was very important to him and he made a point of getting to know each member. He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched in his 54 years. He is survived by his father Richard Dunton, stepmother Christina Dunton in Auburn and by his mother Grace Hunter in Cotati. He is also survived by his siblings Tracey Coddington, Monty and Randy, Konrad and Yvonne Dunton. A Memorial for Rodney will take place on Sunday October 4, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. at the Petaluma Women's Club Building located at 518 B Street.

Rodney was the first neighbor we met when we moved to Petaluma. He was a gentle soul, a good honest man and he spoke his truth. We enjoyed our philosophical talks and could Rodney talk... We will miss seeing him on Colwood Drive. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and we know you are missing him too.

I never met anyone who had a problem with Rod. He was always good company and enjoyed conversation with everyone. He recognized a greater purpose to living life, and we will always miss him.

"A FRIEND THAT WILL BE MISSED" ! So very saddened to hear of Rodney's passing ! This morning a fellow rancher phoned me up,to share the sad news of our mutual friend's passing. It definitely took me by surprise ! Because,he was "still so young",strong and athletically fit ! He always held strong to his convictions ! And if he had something on his mind ! Well,he'd sure tell you "exactly" what it was ! He was always concerned with the quality of the food in his daily meals,no fats, preservatives etc. ... ! He was always so concerned of treading lightly on this earth, always trying to leave a place cleaner than what he found ! As a fence or gate builder, you could find "no one" who took more pride in doing a "perfect" and "strong" job,one that would last ! And his many, many completed fences and gates that dot Marin and Sonoma County farms and ranches are a testimate to his talent and relentless determination ! No matter how small or big the project was,he approached it with the same high level of commitment and determination of doing his very best ! A fence building "shortcut",was not in his vocabulary ! He was a real dedicated fence building craftsman ! He will be missed by many who appreciated him as a loyal friend and expert fence builder ! Rodney, every time that I open one of your strong gates or see the cows behind your well built fences,I'll smile and look up to the heavens ! I'll miss you,but never forget you ! Your level of commitment to a job "done well",is a vanishing art ! I now know, that those "big pearly gates" will have an expert fence builder to see that they always "swing open" effortlessly ! I'll be checking on it when my day comes as well ! See you later ! Your Friend, Ernie Tacherra & Family (Marin County Rancher)
