Roger Dormire Obituary

Roger Dwain Dormire
1947 - 2022
Roger Dormire was born in Howell, Michigan on June 5, 1947 as that was the closest hospital to the small town of Webberville where his parents and family lived. He died February 2, 2022 playing golf with his regular, longtime Wednesday foursome of Dan, Phil and Greg, at Windsor Golf Course.
He loved growing up surrounded by all his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He loved working on his grandparents (West) dairy farm in Webberville, MI. When he was in fifth grade, his family moved to Tucson, AZ as his father had tuberculosis. Now he could be a real cowboy!
Roger graduated from Wilcox High School, Santa Clara, CA, the class of 1965. Next he received an AA from West Valley College. On a basketball scholarship, earning Best Defensive Player, he attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA graduating in 1969 with a BA degree in Business Administration. His first job was with Bank of America in Watsonville, CA. The bank moved him around a few times as he rose through the ranks finally ending in Healdsburg in 1978 as the agriculture loan officer. It was a perfect fit – he got to work with the local young wine business! By then he had a wife and two small daughters. He entrenched himself in his new town, work and found a church home at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Roger was a devout and faithful servant of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His faith in God was foremost in his life and guided him in all that he accomplished. He was full of joy. He loved being with his family and friends, playing cards, gardening, cutting down dead trees and was a masterful storyteller. Those traits came naturally as his West family uncles (Dwain, Roy, Gene and Neil) had those same exact characteristics.
Roger was President of Healdsburg Shared Ministries at the time of his death. He steadily guided the Healdsburg Food Pantry, keeping it staffed and open four days a week all through the COVID-19 pandemic. It was one of his greatest joys to feed and take care of those less fortunate. He considered himself blessed by God and with that a responsibility to live his life as a servant.
In 2018 the City of Healdsburg honored him with the Marie Sparks Award as Volunteer of the Year. His work through Healdsburg Shared Ministries, NCCS now Reach for Home, Healdsburg Boys & Girls Club and Kiwanis earned him this recognition. In Kiwanis he served as President and on various other committees. Usually he was the first to volunteer for any and all duties and service projects. He was a founding member of the Menss Ski Trip Weekend. He loved being part of the Kiwanis family.
Roger found a new church home at the Healdsburg Community Church where he was an active member for the past 13 years. In 2016 he traveled to Guinea-Bissau in West Africa on a mission trip to help bring clean drinking water to the people. He sang in the church choir, served on the Council and worked on the Finance and Mission Committees.
Roger married Debby in 2001. They complemented each other more than anyone will ever realize. His pride and joy was being with his family. Together Debby and Roger watched their blended family grow as all their daughters married and started families. They loved being Grandpa and Grandma! They happily embarked on many travels throughout the world. The best were the family vacations on Maui surrounded by those they loved the most. Roger had many favorite places, but the one that held his heart was snorkeling with the turtles on the west and south shores of Maui.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife Debby. His daughter Jennifer (Brad) McKenzie, Paige and Lance of Coronado, CA and daughter Carrie (Zack) Boyce, Taylor & Tanner of Windsor, CA . His step-daughters Andrea Faye of Ventura, CA and Samantha (Amber) Lucas, Alexander and Arthur of San Jose, CA. His sisters Rebecca (Leonard) LaRussa of Aptos, CA and Deborah LaSecla of Thousand Oaks, CA, many cousins, nieces, nephews and Barbara the mother of his daughters.
Roger was preceded in death by both his parents, Phillip Dormire, Sr. and Helen Dormire and his older brother Phillip James Dormire, Jr.
Roger's Celebration of Life will be February 19th at the Healdsburg Community Church at 1 o'clock in the afternoon with a reception following. Roger requested Hawaiian attire. Masks are required. Zoom will be available at the Healdsburg Community Church website. For those that wish, memorial contributions in Rogers name may be made to the Healdsburg Food Pantry at P.O. Box 1646, Healdsburg, CA. 95448 or to the Healdsburg Kiwanis Club, Roger Dormire Scholarship Fund, at P.O. Box 1156, Healdsburg, CA. 95448.

Such joy Roger brought to the world and to our dear friend, Debby. We enjoyed every minute of each time we were able to spend together with them. Roger's smile and warmth, his love of life and his positive attitude filled the room. His love of his family and the Lord was evident in all he did and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, Roger.

Roger I first met you at my brother in law Mike Kellners memorial service. You were good friends for many years during and after High School. Little did I know that when Maggie and I moved to Healdsburg I would start a friendship with you. We attended the same church and were both in Kiwanis. Every project, fundraiser or where ever help was needed you were always there. I was always impressed by your caring giving nature, your sense of humor and the outstanding person you were. 20 years is never enough time to spend around someone like you. You will be sorely missed. Love, Chris and Maggie Metrulas

Grandpa,
Thank you for accepting me into your family & life. You readily excepted me into the family. I will always cherish your visits. While I can never match your love for your grandkids, I hope to be at least a fraction of the Grandpa to my future grandkids that you were to yours.
In your absence, I promise to be the best son-in-law I can be. I promise to take care of my wife, your oldest daughter Jen, until the day I die. I will also do whatever I can to help & support your surviving wife, Grandma Debby. Additionally, I will do the same for your daughter Carrie & her family.
I wish I had more time to spend with you. I always enjoyed spending time with you.

I am very proud to call you my Father-in-Law.

Your Son-in-Law,
Brad McKenzie

We are thankful for the blessing of Roger in our lives. He was a wonderful friend and guardian angel to our mother Donna. He did so many thoughtful things to help her on her property like grow vegetables and deliver her a annual Christmas tree from the Kiwanis club. I will miss his big bright eyed grin and boyish charm. Thank you for sharing Rogers story. Praying for Debbie and Roger's family and asking god for to show them his love and give comfort during this difficult time.

My sincerest and deepest condolences to Debby and family. Meeting Roger through Kiwanis has been a highlight of both hilarity and wisdom. His life was rich with experience and blessings. We should all be so lucky. I will best remember when, at Brandt's Beach, Roger got up to share his life with all of us. I gasped in amazement and laughed until my eyes leaked. My eyes are leaking now for the loss of such a wonderful man. I thank God for sharing Roger with all of us.

Roger's life has been an inspiration to the community, our club, and especially to me. I personally have watched him be the hands and feet of Jesus to a multitude of people in all walks of life, serving without judgment and with an open heart. His life inspired me to be a better servant for Christ and it has been such a blessing to have known him. Certainly, he was greeted at the gates of heaven with open arms by Jesus who said, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Such massive shoes to fill, Roger never said NO to any request. His endless supply of energy truly made a difference in the workings of the Food Pantry. And such a nice guy, quick to laughter and always willing to be of service.
