For Steve

Ten geese flew by
calling out across the sky
for the soul who rose up before them

the calls were heard
by the ones good-hearted
who mourn the soul who had departed

the geese will make their way
to another part of the sky
and the departed soul we love will finally fly

forces of nature for the beloved lost poet
voice in geese´s symbolism show it
moved on eternity´s wings

can anyone else tell the story
which the playwright has carried off with him
searching as if to be reunited like a lost and phantom limb

where do the swirling thoughts go
when the creative spark moves on
and the writer´s pen lies silent on their desk

the voices of peace represented by geese
tell us he has moved on through the sky
yet in our hearts we carry parts

Never lost in the bye and bye

My condolences to his family and close friends. I only knew Steven a very short time, but each interaction I shared with him left me smiling. We seemed to always converse and share our love of music and poetry. The strength mysican have to share emotions and make long last impressions that could impact the lives of many.. our last conversation was about Freddie Mercury and the band Queen. As we parted he left me grinning as he continued to sing loudly Queens song " Killer Queen". I'll never forget that. Thank you Steven for the moments shared. Rest was brother. -Q

Steve worked for a time at Copperfield's Books while I was employed there as events coordinator and also published a small but exciting literary magazine...The Dickens. He made some stellar contributions!! I also remember his devotion to his little chihuahua...Happy Boy?...something like that. That tiny creature reciprocated Steve's affection. And Steve grieved so when he died. Oh Steve, you had your days in the sun. You are not forgotten, and I send my heartfelt prayers to your remaining family. Rest easy now, Steve.

Steven was such a gifted Poet, Playwright, and Writer. His play "Die Laughing." was performed at (the now defunct) DC SPACE Theatre, to a packed house. This play was significant because it was about a comedian dealing with HIV on stage and showed how Steven was such an activist Politically. It had great reviews and Steven was very proud of it. A great deal of his work was political or a social statement on the world and he was always interested in making the world a better place. His other play "D.O.I." was performed on ACT Public Television in Arlington, VA and a radio play "Autistic Autumn Brown" was performed on the radio program of The Poet and the Poem where afterward he was interviewed by Grace Cavalieri (a famous Poet) who hosted that program. His work was so important to Steven and he had many poems and short stories published and many awards given to him. That is who he was, a very gifted and thoughtful man whom I was lucky enough to share a part of his life with and I will always remember him with such Love! Blessings on your Journey Steven.

I first met Steve when we both worked for Copperfield's Books. Even during his most difficult times, Steve was a voracious and expansive reader, with wide-ranging tastes that included drama, fiction, and poetry, and he actually encouraged me to listen to the rapper Eminem, with an ear to the storytelling and rhyme schemes. Steve also shared some of his own poetry with me. It was gratifying to give him new authors and hear his opinions afterwards. My deepest sympathy to Steve's devoted mother Barbara and sister Leslie.
