MAJOR GENERAL ARTHUR J. SACHSEL, USAF, DC (Ret) General Sachsel was born November 11, 1926, in New York City and graduated from Jonathan Dayton Regional High School, Springfield, N.J., in 1944. He attended the University of Michigan and received his doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1950. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served as a general dental officer with the 1254th Military Air Transport Service, Washington, D.C. In February 1951, he was assigned to the 36th Fighter-Bomber Wing, Furstenfeldbruck Air Base, Germany. The general left the Air Force in 1953 and opened a private dental practice in Garwood, N.J. In July 1956 he returned to the Air Force and served as chief of restorative dentistry at the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Bolling Air Force Base, D.C., until August 1957. The general then transferred to the Air Force hospital, Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, first as a general dentist and later as base dental surgeon. Returning to the United States in August 1960, he entered an Air Force-sponsored residency in periodontics at Ohio State University where he earned a master of science degree. In June 1962, he was assigned to the Air Force hospital at Travis Air Force Base, California, where he served successively as staff periodontist, chief of periodontics and assistant base dental surgeon. From July 1966 to January 1969, the general was assigned to the Air Force dispensary at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, as chief of periodontics. He then returned to the United States and served successively as chief of periodontics, assistant base dental surgeon, base dental surgeon and director of dental intern training at the U.S. Air Force Regional Hospital at Chanute Air Force Base, IL. He remained there until July 1974, when he became base dental surgeon and director of dental intern training at the regional hospital at March Air Force Base, California. In August 1979 the general returned to Germany as Headquarters United States Air Forces in Europe's assistant for dental services at Ramstein Air Base. He was selected as the Air Force Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services, promoted to Brigadier General and assumed his duties at Bolling Air Force Base on October 1, 1982. He was promoted to Major General on March 1, 1984, with a date of rank of September 1, 1980. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Dr. Sachsel when I was stationed at Ramstein Air Base, West Germany as a Dental Assistant Specialist from March 1980-March 1982. I will never forget how kind and personable he was and also a great leader who really had the pulse of the Dental Corps. May the Lord bless you and your family and Rest in Peace.

Sincerely,

I was thinking of General Sachsel and thought to look him up. With sadness, I learned of his passing. While this posting comes several years after his passing, I wanted to share the impact he had on me as a human and a leader. I was an enlisted member of the Surgeon General's staff. One very cold winter morning, I had on earmuffs (a rarity), so, thinking I had something on my head, I forgot to put on my hat (which is mandatory). Gen Sachsel must have caught a glimpse of me in that condition outside his window. Later that day, he came to my desk and said, quietly, calmly & sincerely, "Sgt Basilio, I am certain you did not intend to embarrass the Surgeon's Office by not wearing your hat". And, of course, he was right! I would never have! But his positive correction of my misdeed taught me how to instill confidence, loyalty and positiveness in dealing with conflict. He was a Leader's Leader and a man I admired very much! As a man of faith, I know he has gone to his riches in heaven! God Bless him and his family! MSgt Ken Basilio, USAF (Ret)

To the family: I never had the pleasure of working for General Sachsel, directly. Yet, indirectly he had a positive impact on my career. I did get to meet him as he toured the bases to check on the troops. He was a well-respected thought-leader. He passed down visions of keeping the dental clinics and its leaders on pathways to stay 5-years ahead of the thoughts of our contemporaries in the medical service. I don't know if the desire to have Dental Squadrons was his idea but I'm pretty sure he had his hands in it. I am so glad he got to see them come into being.
Rest in Paradise General Sachsel.

Dear Lea, I received your card yesterday and wanted to let you know of our sadness at this news. My parents loved you and Art very much and through much of their military lives, the two of you were a part of those memories. I remember all those years ago when we brought our boys to California and visited with you...... and then the lovely dinner at L'Orangerie. Peace and blessings to you Lea and all your family. May his memory be for a blessing. Love, Nancy Tarsitano and family

Lea,
There is nothing to hold back the tears reading of your loss and the loss to all of the Air Force family. Gen Sachsel was all things to all people Being with him made all a better person. Words will NEVER express the love and respect I had for him. It was always a thrill for me to bring lobsters to the house and see how he loved them. If there was ever a person who was a saint on earth it is General Sachsel

Dad,
I am sad today.
I wish that I could hold your hand.
I have things that I want you to know.

You have changed my life in a most remarkable way.
The son that you raised is the love of my life,
a most incredible father to his own children.
Your good and generous heart shapes everything you do.
You are wise and filled with a faith so true.
You know the right thing to say when life's craziness gets in the way.
More than anything, though,
You have offered us the steady deep kind of love
that has made our family strong.

My heart is breaking with the knowledge of your suffering,
but I only have to step outdoors and suddenly,
You ARE the hummingbirds, the heart-shaped stones and all of the flowers and trees.
Your appreciation and respect for God's creations shines and suddenly,
you are everywhere in front of me.

How lucky I am, how fortunate our children, to be your family. I thank you. I celebrate you. I appreciate you,
I love you so very much.

Spiritually, you are the strongest man I have ever known. The depth of your grace and dignity awes me and I am a better person having the honor of being part of your family. Still, despite your efforts to shield us from the pain and suffering, the inability to be able to physically touch you, to hug you and see your smile panics and profoundly grieves me. I so wish that I could share these days or even one, with you. My life began when I met your son and I have you and Mom to thank for everything good in it...though I say my prayers and can send praises and thanks to you both, there is no place in my breaking heart for such a good bye. I want you to know that when my sadness overwhelms me, I do what I do best, I write it out and cry...its the only way I have to show you how much I love you. "So proud to be your daughter".

Dear Lea and Family,
My sincerest condolences for the loss of a very special person, Arthur J. Sachsel.
I remember Art as the man who swept my nursing school classmate off of her feet at a dance at Travis Air Force Base.
Art loved to play tennis, travel, especially to Cabo San Lucas, and he had a great sense of humor.
He and his bride maintained our friendship over the years and he will be missed. It was my privilege to have known him.
Blessings to you Lea, my friend, and to all of your family.

General (Dr.) Sachsel was always a man who put his Officers and the Air Force first. Truly a "Dentist's dentist" and an "Officer's Officer". I'm enriched by having known him, and sharing with him some of his assignments. I followed him at Kadena AFB in Okinawa many years after he left: his assistant was my assistant, we worked in the same Operatory. I could feel his presence there at all times. My friend, enjoy now the glory prepared for you from the beginning of times.

General Sachsel set the example on how to live your life, love your God, and treat your fellow man. I consider myself extremely lucky to have known him, and his personal interest in my career touched me more than I could ever express. I will never forget how he made sure that he attended religious services no matter where he was serving on TDYs. I will always remember one of his most unforgettable sayings " Don't do dumb things". May he rest in the peace of the Lord.

To me, and to many, Dr. Sachsel represented not only epitome of a dental officer, but also that of a genuine human being. I will always remember my one year with him at March and how he impressed me as the type of teacher and leader I could never hope to be.

We have lost the love, leadership and friendship of a great man. It is comforting to know General Sachsel is resting in peace, without pain and in the company of our Lord.

I only met Gen Sachsel once at Langley AFB as a very young Airman, yet his big smile, and genuine, caring way made a lasting impression on me. When I spoke to him, he gave his undivided attention...that was 1984, but I remember those 2 or 3 minutes like it was this afternoon. People like Gen Sachsel make a difference in other people's lives because they know everybody matters, and the interaction is far more important than the exchange. Godspeed and fair winds General.

September 23, 2013

I will always remember Art as the dynamic leader of our AF Dental Corps. However his path to that position included being a productive periodontist and dental corps officer. His guidance and personal attention to everyone was his greatest asset. I was proud and honored to serve with him as his Special Consultant in Periodontics. He may be gone but he will NEVER be forgotten by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. My heartfelt condolences to Lee and the family at this difficult time. Ralph M. Arnold, Col, USAF DC (ret)

I am shocked to hear of Art's passing. We have been corresponding for a good while discussing the hip, golf and the Air Force. We discussed living in military retirement communities, and not once did he give a clue as to any other illnesses. Art was such a steady compassionate man and leader of our AF Dental Service. God Speed my friend, you ARE missed!

Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing and working with General Art Sachsel will be terribly saddened by his passing; he was a most capable Air Force Dental Corps leader and a unique individual who genuinely cared for those under his command. Our condolences go out to his family.
