Barbara Myers Obituary

BARBARA J. MYERS
Barbara J. Myers was born 2/7/1925 in Monroe, Washington to Andrew H. and Emmye Anne (Boone) Jacobsen. She died peacefully at home in Riverside, California with her family on 6/21/2018. She was deeply loved and respected. From 1942 to 1951, she attended the University of Washington where she received a BS and MS in psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Betta Kappa. During this time, she met her husband, Arlo, who was also a psychology student at the university. They married in 1949 and moved to Connecticut where Barbara worked for 8 years as a research assistant at Yale University while Arlo earned his PhD in psychology and worked as a research psychologist there. While in Connecticut, two of the couple's children were born. They then moved to Bar Harbor, Maine where Arlo worked at the Jackson Memorial Laboratory and their third child was born. In 1961 they relocated to Riverside, California where Arlo joined the psychology department faculty at UC Riverside. From 1969 until her retirement in 1988 Barbara worked as a Secretary for the Riverside County Registrar of Voters office where she was regarded as an authority on state election laws. In retirement Barbara continued serving the community as a volunteer at the local legal aid clinic and the public library, maintaining the local history section and selecting books for those unable to get to the library. She loved politics, reading, cats, yellow roses, and watching her beloved Angels. Barbara didn't drive and loved to walk. She was well-known in the Magnolia Center area as "the lady who walked everywhere." Barbara was married to her husband, Arlo, for 64 years, until his death in 2014. She was predeceased by her brothers, Andrew, Jr. and Roger Jacobsen, and her sister, Janet (Jacobsen) Ross. She is survived by her children, Roger Myers, Anne Myers Kelley and Kate Myers; her sons-in-law, David Kelley and Thomas Hummel; her grandchildren, Shannon McKellar and Christopher Hummel; and her great- grandchildren, Adam, Madison, Kaden and Ryan. I'm so sorry for her family members. I worked with her in 1980 at the Election Department and she was a wonderful lady. Very smart and knowledgable. I'm sad to see her go. God Bless You, Shirley Lilly
