November 20, 2011

I cried when you passed away. I still cry today. Although I loved you dearly, I couldn't make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me he only takes the best.

Christmas Without Dahdee

You always kept us laughing with the stories you would tell

And oh your Christmas baking we wish that we could smell

The holiday trips to Diego we will remember well

We’d all ride down together Dahdee, Mitch, and Mel

We’d listen to Christmas carols and have lunch along the way

No matter how Mitch or I tried you’d never let us pay

We’d pile back in the car and you’d begin to sing so gay

And I think with every passing year it became your favorite day

This year things are different we may even shed some tears

But Mitch and I will do our best to spread the Christmas cheer

We’ll remember the past holidays that to us are oh so dear

And maybe it won’t hurt so much because in memories you’re still here

IT HAS BEEN ONLY TWO MONTHS SINCE MY VISIT BUT IT SEEMS SO LONG AGO. HE HAD A WAY ENCROUCHING ON PEOPLE. ALWAYS WITH A STORY. EVEN WHEN HE WAS 3-OR -4 OUR UNCLE ED WOULD COME FROM DEARBORN,MI TO LISTEN TO HIM.
MAY GOD NOW SMOOTH HIS PATH WITH ALL HIS GUESTS IN THE GREAT BEYOND. MAYBE HE CAN HELP US FROM UP THERE

We Love You Dahdee

As we stood at your bedside we knew the time was near

We wanted to be with you because to us you were so dear

So Meechee leaned down close to you to be sure that you would hear

She said we love you Dahdee and Mel and I are here

Yesterday had been your birthday, but we knew you couldn’t stay

So Meechee leaned down once again and said Dahdee it’s Okay

We held your hands and stroked your head to try to ease the way

Then with all our love and through our tears we watched you slip away

Now though the pain hurts so bad that we sometimes cry out loud

We know that you watch over us from up above the clouds

So with our love together the two of us have vowed

To try to do things in our lives to make our Dahdee proud

The Red Greenawalt I knew was a "man for all seasons". Humorist, philosopher, politically astute.. Over years of correspondence he presented himself with a few personal words: he forced me to think, a necessity for our age group.

With Red's passing from one stage of life to another, I started to delete the messages I received from him during the past couple months. It felt like I was erasing a friend and I could not do it. I miss him.

I saved them and sometime in the future when the loss is not so acute, I will view them all. Red and I will have some great laughs together again.

When love beckons you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of loves threshing-floor, into the season less world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For Love is sufficient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody into the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

and to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

The best of who I am is a direct result of my relationship with him. I love you Daddy!

Red - as I think of you so many times at the holidays - I remember your smile and of course the "trains". You're surely going to be missed and remembered in our hearts! May God bless Mitch & Mel during this time.

IT'S ALL RIGHT TO SAY,

"I LOVE YOU!"

It's all right to say "I love you!"

to someone every day,

to obey our Lord's commandment

in a real and vital way.

the world is filled with sorrows

that sometimes touch us all,

and to know that we are loved

lifts us when we fall.

the heart can be a lonely place

when no one comes to call,

but when someone says "I love you!"

we feel ten feet tall!!!

Love's the rainbow after the storm,

roses on a Summer day,

A smile that lights a darkened room

And chases fears away.

Three little words can mean so much,

and they're not hard to say...

It's all right to say "I Love you!"

to someone every day!

Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there.I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there,I did not die.

Red, what words can express my feelings...to the man who took me from Darkness, and into the Light,

and showed me the Truth of living.

You will never be forgotten.

We will definitely miss uncle Red and his humor and quick wit. I recall a couple of incidents at his Harley St. residence. As i was breaking up a concrete driveway one summer, I asked him 'what were we building?'. Without hesitation, he replied 'character'. Good thing he paid better than minimum wage. Another time I was 'chosen' above all others to run an electrical line through his attic. When I was going back to get out, my foot slipped off a joist and went through the ceiling. He thanked me for saving him time in chosing where he was going to put in a light fixture. Glad to have the opportunity to know and learn from you, nephew Phil Greenawalt

Thanks girls, for doing this. You are so thoughtful. We pray that all goes well for all of you - at this time and in the future. You never really lose someone you love as much as you loved your dad and you always have the memories. May God rest his soul. Love to the family.

My Hero

As I ponder the love that I saw in his eyes,

A Godly love, given without compromise....

I recall many times that he stood by my side,

And prodded me on with great vigor and pride.

His voice ever confident, firm and yet fair,

Always speaking with patience, tenderness and care.

The power and might of his hands was so sure,

I knew there was nothing we couldn't endure.

It's true, a few others provided insight,

Yet, he laid the foundation that kept me upright.

He's the grandest of men to have lived on this earth,

Although he's not royal by stature or birth.

He's a man of great dignity, honor and strength.

His merits are noble, and of admirable length.

He's far greater than all other men that I know,

He's my Dad, he's my mentor, my friend and hero.

I Love you Dahdee

Your Little one

Mitch

June 10, 2004

God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so, He called it ... Dad

Dahdee was everything to me.

I will cherish his memories,

And he will live in my heart

Forever.
