Harvey Mandel Obituary

MANDEL, HARVEY 1917 ~ 2007 A long-time resident of Riverside, CA. until his move to Carlsbad, Ca. in 1996 where he semi retired, passed away at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, CA. on January 31, 2007. Harvey Mandel, a well-known restaurateur for 67 years was originally from Los Angeles but began his career in Indio, CA in the 1940s. He moved to Riverside in 1944 to manage the CHI CHI, a popular dinner house and decided to stay. He soon opened his own restaurant and nightclub The La Casita in Rubidoux and then moved to Riverside. In 1955, Harvey bought THE SIRE BAR & GRILL in Magnolia Center, which he continuously operated for 51 years. During his lifetime Harvey owned and operated many other successful restaurants in Riverside and San Bernardino including, The Office, Sire East, White Sands, Sire III, Sire West. Always wanting to operate a well-run and hospitable community establishment, Harvey finally limited his operation to his favorite - The Sire. Harvey often remarked, "You have to have a place to hang your hat." In December of 2005, Harvey and his wife and partner Rosemary celebrated the Sire's 50th Year Anniversary. They were joined by many of the loyal and long-time customers and friends. Harvey Mandel was a long-time supporter of the Riverside City College's Athletic program. For over 20 years he sponsored the SOS Golf Tournament, providing scholarships and support for many of the college?s students. Harvey's move to the La Costa community of Carlsbad was prompted by his love of thoroughbred horse racing. His love of the sport further intensified through the years, as he became an owner of many racehorses. His favorite was Center Balcony whose pictures still adorn the walls of the Sire. He loved the Del Mar live racing season and the other amenities that the Del Mar Thoroughbred and Saddle Club had to offer. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents Tillie and Max Mandel of Los Angeles, his sister Trudy Louis of Los Angeles and Phyllis Arne of Palm Springs. Harvey is survived by his loving wife Rosemary, daughters Monica Woodridge of Big Bear and Suzanne Anderson of Riverside, His son Roger Russell of Carlsbad. Nephews, Jerry and Jeffery Louis, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. Memorial services will be held at the Temple Beth El 2675 Central Ave. Riverside on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. An after service gathering will be announced at that time.
