Andrew Sutor Obituary

Sutor, Andrew P., - of Margate, retired Staff Inspector for the Philadelphia Police Department and casino executive passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, April 10, 2023. He was 82 years old. Andrew was born on August 13, 1940, in Philadelphia.

Andrew was the son of the late Andrew P. Sutor and Evelyn (née Mehl) Sutor. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 amazing years, Virginia "Ginny" (née Nordland); daughter Ginny Sutor of Somers Point, N.J.; daughter Lynn Sutor of Margate, N.J.; and son Andrew P. Sutor IV and his wife Carrie of Bryn Mawr, Pa..; and five grandchildren, Stephen Brown Jr. and Rachel, Olivia, Sophia, and Andrew Sutor (V). Andrew was the oldest of seven brothers. He is survived by three of his brothers: Robert, Edward and James Sutor. He is predeceased by his brothers George, Joseph and John Sutor. Andrew also had twenty-four wonderful nieces and nephews all of whom he loved dearly.

Andrew was a longtime resident of Northeast Philadelphia and later, Margate, N.J. He graduated from Father Judge High School in 1958. He later graduated from Temple University, Northwestern University (Traffic Institute), and the University of Virginia (the FBI Academy). In the early 1960s, Andrew was appointed Special Agent for the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps. He was granted a Top Secret Security Clearance by the Army and served his country at Fort Holabird in Baltimore, Md. Andrew served as a Police Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Staff Inspector in the Philadelphia Police Department until he retired in 1980. He was an instructor at the Philadelphia Police Academy. Andrew served in a staff command capacity in Detective Headquarters and Command Inspections Bureau. His commands included Stakeout (now SWAT) Unit and the Accident Investigation Division (AID). During these years, Andrew taught criminal justice courses at Temple University, Philadelphia Community College, Northwestern University, the University of Delaware, the University of Connecticut, Case Western Reserve Law School and the University of Hawaii. He wrote numerous articles and material on law enforcement topics, including a Police textbook titled "Police Operations." Following his retirement from the Police Department, Andrew accepted the position of Director of Security at Harrah's Casino Atlantic City. He then served as Assistant General Manager of Trump Plaza. In recent years, Andrew managed a casino consulting firm and later became an expert witness focusing on security matters.

In his spare time, Andrew enjoyed writing a syndicated weekly column on casino gaming for several local publications under the pen name, "The Wizard of Odds." Andrew enjoyed telling jokes (to anyone and everyone), reading, and spending winters in Florida. Andrew especially loved his grandchildren and spending time together with his family during the holidays. He was a member of the Philadelphia Police Department's League of the Sacred Heart, Fraternal Order of Police (Lodge 5), SE Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, Delaware Valley Association of Chiefs of Police and FBI National Academy Association.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church, at the corner of Ventnor Avenue and Jerome Avenue, Margate, N.J, on Saturday, April 15th 2023 at 11 a.m. where friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
