Logan, Dr. Ben L., - 84, of Newport News, VA, formerly of Atlantic City, NJ, passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side after a brief illness on Thursday, December 28, 2023.
He was born June 1, 1939, in Java, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and graduated in 1959 from Northside High School in Gretna, Virginia. Ben later attended Temple University, married, and moved to Atlantic City where he settled and began growing his family.
Ben worked as a Machinist for Wheaton Plastics for more than 30 years. His accomplishments include obtaining a commercial pilot's license in 1972 and owning an airplane. During his early years, he enjoyed scuba diving and riding motorcycles; but mostly, his greatest accomplishments were deeply rooted in ministry. He was always excited about sharing God's word and leading others to Christ. Ben pastored Riverside Baptist Church, later renamed Grace Cathedral Baptist Church, which today is known as Grace Today Ministry and is thriving under the leadership of his son-in-law, Pastor Marvin Graham. Ben was ahead of his time, an innovator, amongst the first, if not the first, to start many ministries in Atlantic City. To name a few, Ben trained many on how to execute a successful door-to-door witness ministry, and through the success of that ministry, the church would grow which prompted him to create one of the first bus ministries in Atlantic City to transport congregants to and from church. He wrote and published the first Christian magazine in the area, "The Coming Messiah". He also was the first to have a weekly broadcast called "The Coming Messiah" on the local radio station WUSS in Atlantic City, NJ, and WKBY in Chatham, VA. He was also one of the first to create an audio/visual ministry in Atlantic City for his church, Riverside Baptist Church. Many other churches would have him come to train their members including Northfield Baptist Church in Northfield, NJ, and Miracle Temple in Newport News, VA where he served on the ministerial staff. Ben served as Pastor Emeritus at Grace Today Ministry. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Churches for many years and served as the treasurer. Ben loved to sing and started many gospel singing groups. The Gospel Harmonettes and The Heavenly Echoes of NY were among them.
Ben is predeceased by his parents, Garry Hunt Taylor and Willie Catherine Coleman Taylor; his father, Elisha Logan; his grandparents who raised him, Abraham and Eva Coleman; his first wife, Phyllis Marilyn Ramsey Logan; his second wife, Floretta Logan; his daughter, Kathy Louise Logan; his aunts, Helen Coleman Coates and Corenna Coleman Rudd; and his cousins, McKenzie Coates and Delores Rudd Walker.
