James McNelly Obituary

McNelly, James E., - James E. "Jim" McNelly, age 91, died December 4, 2021 peacefully at home. Jim was born in Chester, PA. A 1949 graduate of Chester High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret (Moccia) in 1952. A member of the United States Army Reserve, Jim was called to active duty shortly after their wedding. Private First Class McNelly subsequently served in Korea with the 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. As an infantry man and radio operator, PFC McNelly participated in four separate campaigns during the Korean War. His personal awards include the Army Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal (with four bronze star devices), and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was also inducted into the 7th Infantry Division Order of the Bayonet. Following his combat tour in Korea, PFC McNelly returned to the United States and received an honorable discharge for his service. Jim went on to employment at Scott Paper in Chester, as an adjustor of machinery for over 30 years. During this time, he and Margaret "Peg" raised three children, James R., Brian and Judy. After retirement, Jim and Peg hit the road in their camper. For fourteen months they traveled the US, Canada, and Mexico – "I took your Mom everywhere she wanted to go." Upon their return, they expanded a cottage purchased in 1947 by Jim's parents, Harry and Marion, and settled "at the shore". Jim and Peg were married 62 years before she passed in 2014. Jim was a devout Christian, a member of Aston Presbyterian Church in PA for over 60 years before joining Cold Spring Presbyterian in New Jersey after retirement. Jim loved his family dearly – and sunsets over the Delaware Bay, hot coffee, poached eggs, tinkering in the garage, John Wayne movies, watching cars drive really fast whilst always turning left, Glen Campbell, the Philadelphia Eagles, old 1950's TV shows, bagpipes, and thankfully at least one Beatles song – "Hey Jude". He is survived by his son James and wife Florence, daughter Judy, grandchildren Kirstin, James, Sean, and Devon, and great-grandchild Isabella. Visitation: Friday, December 10, 2021, 12:00pm-1:15pm at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home Ltd., 5980 Chichester Ave., Aston, PA. Funeral Service: Friday, December 10, 2021, at 1:30 pm at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Aston, PA.
