Michael Marshall Obituary



MARSHALL, MICHAEL R. "Hobo" 99 - of Atlantic City, passed away Wednesday morning, March 18, 2009 in the AtlantiCare Reg. Med. Center following a short illness. Born and raised in Hazelton, PA., one of four sons and five daughters of the late Raffael and Antonia Marshall. He came to Atlantic City with his family in 1925 and with his brothers formed the Marshall Brothers Trucking Company, specializing in general construction, trucking and steel erecting. In the 1930s he opened Builders Supply Company, the first ready mix concrete company in South Jersey. Hobo also ventured into the demolition business. In the 1960s he performed one of his largest demolition endeavors, the Uptown Urban Renewal Project, consisting of approximately 70 acres of buildings. Thirty years later, his companies were involved in much of the construction in the same area as well as most of Atlantic City's casinos and public buildings. Up until his death at 99 years young, Hobo was active and the driving force in his family's companies, Jeddo Construction Inc. and Pleasantville Iron Works, LLC. Hobo was a long time active member in St. Michaels Church, donating much time, material and financial support to the expansion and upkeep of the parish facilities. Michael was a member of the Sons of Italy Columbus Lodge 783, UNICO A.C. Chapter Charter Member, Loyal Order of the Moose, Chelsea Neighborhood Assoc., Lifetime Member-Operating Engineers Local 825, Columbus Day Committee, ALKI Club, Lions Club 1955, Italian Center Social Circle 1968, Metropolitan Business Citizens Assoc. and Lifetime Member-North American Hunting Club. He received numerous awards and appointments including the 1999 UNICO National A.C. Chapter "Man of the Year" award, served on the Transition Team 2001 for Mayor Elect Lorenzo Langford, the 2004 Recognition of Lifetime Excellence Award by Sheriff of Atlantic County James McGettigan and the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Honoree Order of Sons of Italy-Christopher Columbus Lodge 783. In addition to his parents, Michael Marshall is predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Antoinette "Toby" Marshall, his daughter Rosaday LaRocca; sisters Rose Farnell, Margaret Kostar and Grace Flynn and brothers Nicholas, Joseph and Rex. He is survived by his son Michael J. Marshall, daughter Antionette "Toni" Dorf; sister Rachael Werner; grandchildren Robert LaRocca (Maria), Michael LaRocca (Lorraine), John LaRocca (Wendy), Kristina Molony, Alexandra Charlton (Michael), Michael Marchall, Jr., Kimberly Marshall, Matthew Marshall (Jennifer), Dominic Marshall (Kristin) and Michele Marshall; great-grandchildren Robert J. and Marc LaRocca, Michael Jr. and Brianna LaRocca, Victoria, Abigail and John Jr. LaRocca, Michael Paul, Sean and Michele Molony, Madison Charlton, Mathew Jr. and Mackenzie Marshall, Rileigh and Gabriel and Grace Marshall, Jordan Conover and great-great granddaughter Gianna LaRocca, numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass for Michael "Hobo" Marshall will be Celebrated at 1:30pm Monday, March 23, 2009 in St. Michaels Church, 10 North Mississippi Avenue, AC. Friends may call from 11:00am until 1:00pm in DANTE HALL, (adjacent to church). The Rite of Committal will be offered in the Mausoleum in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing, following Mass.
