Norman Hirschfeld Obituary

Norman Hirschfeld

February 17, 1934 - August 13, 2025

Norman Hirschfeld, 91, of Egg Harbor Township, passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2025. Born on February 17, 1934, in the Bronx.

After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts, he then served in the Army's band in Japan. After returning from the Army, he then married Carol.

He received his BS and MS from NYU in Special Education and Guidance and Student Personnel. He later went on to complete his Ed. D. from Temple University in Vocational Education and Administration. He started his career teaching in Mount Vernon, N.Y., as a special education teacher, and after several years became a guidance counselor, and then Director of Guidance. Moving on, he was appointed Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent in the Pearl River School District. After 17 years in New York, he relocated to New Jersey as the principal of the middle school in Absecon. Retiring after 35 years in public education, he was an Adjunct Professor at both Temple University and Richard Stockton College teaching several courses and working with student teachers while visiting their work sites.

He was loved by all, whether it was as a camp director in the Catskills, a lifeguard at the Mainland Recreation Association, working with the Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, among other community activities or just enjoying poker with the guys. Norman and Carol loved to travel the world, be it cruising, going to Israel, or their favorite gambling places of Puerto Rico and Las Vegas. He was always the first to laugh at himself and we always will have many, many "Normisms" to remind us of his great sense of humor. As a devoted family man, he would never miss his children's or his grandchildren's events.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carol; and son, Adam. He is survived by his 97-year-old brother, Marvin (Miriam); daughter, Cindy (Steven); daughter, Alisse (Dave); and grandchildren, Steffanie and Aden.

I knew Dr Hirschfeld as my Principal of Emma C Attles School in Absecon. He was a very kind man. My Dad, Ron Helbig was a teacher at the school at the time and they were friends. I ran into him a few years ago at the WAWA by English Creek and he still remembered me which is amazing as all the kids he knew along the way. I will always remember him fondly and want to express my condolences to his family.

I remember working with Norm at the MRA pool! He was always so personable and kind! I remember having some great conversations about working as an educator as I was just beginning my teaching career! Rest in Peace, Norm!!

Norm was one of my Principals at the Attales school for a number of years. He was great and missed when he retired. He was a people person, a truly good man.

He was my Principal at ECA in the early 80s. He was kind and an excellent school guidance counselor when I needed it most - I can´t say it always worked, but in the long run I count him as one of those special persons on the road of life who always did his best to nudge me in the right direction. My condolences to his family and wishing him eternal peace.

I didn't know Mr. Hirschfeld. His son Adam was a great guy and a very good tennis player.

I enjoyed the acquaintance of Norman as a school board member at Absecon and will always remember the sadness it brought him when he lost his dear son Adam! They were good days in Absecon and I certainly am glad our paths crossed! Glenn Gabrielle
